It's a poll!
About blood??
This comes from a discussion with a friend about how few people on the Lost island actually knew their blood type. Because I know mine I just assumed it was common knowledge for people until I discovered that [livejournal.com profile] hellbob didn't know his. Not only do I know my blood type, but I also know hellbobs, and I know my father is AB, but don't know if it is positive or negative.
I also found a website that has all the facts about blood types:
http://www.bloodbook.com/type-facts.html

[Poll #470755]

Edit Hey, [livejournal.com profile] mle292, if I get in an accident & need blood I'm coming after you!

When we learned about blood types in grade school, I found out I was O+. I just always remembered that (I mean, how do you forget? It's like forgetting your eye color...) and just assumed that at some point in everyone's life, they were made aware of their blood type.

I've since learned that it's more common for someone NOT to know their blood type.

I know I'm A from Pfeiffer Institute's tests. Is the + or - also known as the RH factor? If so, then I am + because they tested for RH negative when I was pregnant.

And from that site you linked to: One standard unit or pint of Blood equals about two cups.

Yep. Thats right. Cuz the bag of blood never has exactly 1 pint. It is about 1 pint & therefore about two cups. :) I think that's why they tend to call them units more often than pints.

And yes, RH is the +/-.

I found out what mine was in high school. A-

For some odd reason, when I was starting my work-up for transplant, I was thinking I was B-! (I was thinking of my dad's for some reason, I guess.) Talk about a brain fart.

Thankfully, my actual blood-type is a match for the first person to offer me a kidney.

Did you know that when giving or receiving organs, the positive and negative markers don't matter? My donor is A+, and it's not a problem. Yay!

At the Science Museum, there's a scale that when one stands on it, a big cylinder filled with what I think must be corn syrup and coloring fills up to represent the approximate amount of blood in the person being weighed. I've got some to spare.

Also, it occurs to me that I know both of my parent's blood types but I don't remember my daughter's. I knew it, but have forgotten. Betcha that's going to be important again someday.
