Since I live in Minnesota, and since this is the coldest day of the year so far, I'm pretty much required to make a post about the weather, aren't I?

It's -21ºF! Eek! (That's -29ºC for all you non-Americans.)

Luckily I have a [livejournal.com profile] hellbob who started my car when he left for work.

If I was working a full day today I think I'd actually have to put on a coat when running next door to Surdyk's. -10º is about my cutoff for wearing a coat just to run next door...

Mine beeps when it hits 37'F. Scares me silly if I forget what that "bong" sound means. I hear a noise, and it's a warning sound, but warning for what? What's wrong? Do I need to stop and check something?

Oh, just the temperature warning beep. Right. Then I feel silly for forgetting.

It's annoying if it's hovering around 40 - drops below and beeps, then the warning light goes off when it goes back up, then beeps again.

same beep as ZOMG! NO FUEL!

which is more worrying than "It's a bit nippy outside"

Yeah, that would be obnoxious.

I don't think mine beeps to say no fuel. The new car has a warning light and I don't remember about the other one. I never let the gas tank get low enough to trigger anything. I don't think the older car (the temp-beepy one) has anything to say low gas. It has a display of how many miles you have left before you stop, but it doesn't warn you when you get there.

our old one had a warning light, at which point you knew you had 30-40 miles left, roughly. The new one beeps at 50 miles remaining, then again at 25 miles.

It's pretty useful, but I don't believe it.

There was an episode of Top Gear a while back where Jeremy Clarkson drove an Audi from London to Edinburgh and back again on a single tank - the computer said he was down to zero miles while he was still quite a way from the finish point and he still made it...

Yeah, I don't believe the "miles left" calculation either.

I think I would only attempt that kind of experiment with backup support for when I run out and stall.

Cars tell you when you're low on gas? What a neat concept!
My gas gauge doesn't work so I just have to fill up every 200 miles.

Yep. A little light goes on on the dash to basically say "you'd better find a gas station NOW". Even my LeBaron that I had in high school had one of those, though with my habits I almost never saw it. I think I let it get low once, just to see if it worked.

Mine *used* to beep at me & have a light come on. Of course, it also *used* to point to how much gas was left instead of staying on 3/4 tank ALL THE TIME!

Yeah, well, I'm sure ours will crap out at some point, too.
