My first painting

Well, we finally did a painting that wasn't just a color theory study, so here it is!
An update, because I know y'all miss me!
Sep. 13th, 2007 11:06 pmAfter working a few hours there in the morning I head on over to General Mills to put in about 4 hours or so at the temp assignment there. I still don't have a badge to get in though so I have to call back to the girls in charge of the project to come let me in every day. I'm pretty much just using Excel & Access at that job. It's a good thing they hadn't asked about my Access experience before placing me in the job because I hadn't used it in about 8 years. The stuff I'm doing is easy enough though. I even taught the two girls I report to a trick they didn't know. Pretty simple, just the keyboard shortcut for Run Query, but they'd only been using the button you click w/the mouse. It made me feel all smart and stuff.
Then at about 5:00 I truck on over to school. On Tuesday & Thursday I have painting class. Nothing more exciting than color wheels and color exercises so far, but our next project will be an abstract kinda thing. If mine doesn't suck I'll post a picture when it's done.
And on Wednesdays my class is HTML. We had to pick a subject to do a web page on, so I am going to make Moose his own page.
And that is what I've been up to for the last few weeks. Not the most exciting life, but hey, at least I'm working steady. :)
More randomosity
Aug. 31st, 2007 03:38 pmOn campus this year they've installed these new emergency call box things with blue lights on top. They are at various places on the very tiny campus, as well as each floor of the parking ramp having several.
My first thought regarding them was "Damn, what happened over the summer that we need all this extra security all of a sudden?" Because of wondering that the blue lights don't really make me feel safer at all.
My second thought regarding them was "And really? How would this be useful if/when zombies attack?"
This was a pretty good day.
Aug. 30th, 2007 11:18 pmHey,
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
And my chair is purple. I like purple.
Just the drive in makes me happier than the old job. It is sooooo wonderfully close to home. 10 minute drive, tops. Maybe 15 if I hit every light red and drove the speed limit. And when you turn into the drive for the building it winds up around a hill through woods. It's a really pretty location.
And right after work today I got to go in to school for my painting class. I'm about half done with my first project: the oh so exciting color wheel! I'm not sure if I'll post a pic when it's done or not. I think I'm gonna like painting.
Last night I had my HTML/XHTML class. Doesn't suck so far. At some point I have to figure out what I want the subject of my page to be. We decide what we want to do it on and as the semester goes on and we learn new things each week, we build on what we've gotten done already.
Common sense would have me redoing Rick's sister & her husband's business site. But... I'm already not a huge fan of web design, and frankly, the subject matter of it bores me. I think I'll just wait and apply what I learn in this class to redoing theirs afterwards.
Right now I am leaning towards the idea of doing a web page for Moose. I've got the photo gallery, but I think it would be much more fun to have a site for him. Especially now that he's going to go down to Antarctica. I can do all kinds of fun things like put a map with his travel locations marked.
I'll be dropping him in the mail shortly before flights to McMurdo resume. I saw my favoritest photoshop teacher, Will, last night and he was mightily impressed with Moose's next destination.
It's Labor Day weekend already! Eep! How'd that happen? I'm working only a half day tomorrow, cuz it's the last week of GM's summer flex hours. The only plans I've got so far for the Holiday weekend are me &

I'll probably also hit the zoo on Monday because that's traditionally not a busy day there. Even though it's a holiday, most people who have the day off and want to do something will either go to the State Fair or to the Renaissance Festival because they have set limited dates and the zoo is always there. Besides, Labor Day is the last day for the butterfly garden.
What I done decided on for school
Aug. 27th, 2007 08:33 pm![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
HTML/XHTML Authoring 1: You will develop a basic understanding of HTML/XHTML, Cascading Style Sheets Level 1, Javascript and CGIs by authoring webpages and completing a website. Current Web tools and design issues will be surveyed. Objective will be to produce clean and fast HTML/XHTML pages built and verified to World Wide Web Consortium standards. Instruction will include online readings and tutorials.
I'm not a big fan of web design, but I've only ever had one Dreamweaver class. And from my job hunting I've learned that any web knowledge and skillz are good. Plus, if I still don't like doing web stuff after this I'll know for sure.
So, I'm significantly less stressed now that the school decisions are solved.
The latest school stuff
Aug. 22nd, 2007 12:05 amI have Graphic Design Problems 1 on Tuesdays from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
I have Painting 1 on Tuesday & Thursday from 5:30 PM to 7:45 PM. (I'd originally had this class signed up for at 9:00 AM to 11:15 AM on Mon & Wed. New time sucks but is better than nothing.)
The other class I need that I haven't been able to get into yet is Print Production 2. It is on Wednesdays from 1:00 PM to 4:40 PM.
Since I'm now registered for 6 credits instead of 3 I can get my financial aid, so I will be going to school this semester. I just don't know if I'll be able to get that one class I need. We'll just have to wait & see next week.
Now my decisions for if I don't get into that class are to take just the two classes I need, or to also take an elective that's not required, but would be both useful and interesting.
The two electives I'm looking at are:
Digital Photography I on Fridays from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
Description: This course is an introduction to the digital capture process and digital workflow. The main emphasis will be on RGB color theory, digital measurement, digital input through digital cameras, flatbed and film scanners, and the output of digital image files. You must provide your own digital camera, minimum of 4 mega pixels, digital SLR preferred.
Painter on Thursdays from 1:00 PM to 4:40 PM
Description: In this course, you will learn the effect of rendering digitally in natural media, image editing and animation. You will generate original art and manipulate images with concern for print reproducibility and digital display, using the Painter software and a graphics tablet.
I'm leaning towards the Painter class because I really don't know that software at all yet, and also then I would just have classes on Tuesday & Thursday. There are enough openings in the class that I wouldn't have a problem waiting to find out about PP2 before deciding. .
So I tried to reregister and only one of the three classes I had been signed up for was available!!! One of the classes that isn't available anymore is only offered in the fall. If I can't take it this semester I can't graduate in the spring. And if I can only take one class I can't get financial aid.
So now on top of everything else fucked up, it looks like I'm not going to be in school this semester either, and that means I won't be in school until next fall because most of the spring classes were portfolio & graduation prep, except for one that has a prereq that you have to take in the fall.
Well at least now I can look for jobs that don't have to work around my school schedule. And I can stop trying to find Photoshop jobs since I'm now two years from graduating instead of just one.
fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck!!!!!!!!
Semester is almost over...
May. 3rd, 2007 12:04 pmMy class was cancelled last night, but we were still expected to drop off our homework so the teacher could start grading it today. So I headed to school as usual to get it finished up and printed and assembled. I don't think I would have bothered if I hadn't gone to my morning class, but with the parking pay pass you only pay once per day so I didn't have to pay for parking the second time. The assignment I had to finish was a samples portfolio with examples of 50 different kinds of printing, finishes, folds, etc. I would have been able to assemble it at home except that I don't have a color laser printer there!
Now all I have left for the semester is next week. I have to write a six page paper comparing two designers. I also need to figure out which two designers I want to do. I'm thinking that I'll do Chip Kidd for one of them... That paper is due by noon Wednesday and our teacher also wants us to go to the department's portfolio show that morning. Then in my night class we have one last in class assignment and we are also having a potluck. Then I am on summer vacation for 3 months! Of course, as soon as classes are done I have to start my job hunt...
I'm a real college student today, yo
Mar. 14th, 2007 02:31 pmA sensible HellZiggy would have gone home to take a nap with a 6 hour gap there.
But I didn't. I'm at school.
I'm being productive though... I have a midterm in tonight's class so I've been studying for that with frequent LJ breaks to amuse my mind. I also wandered on down the street to Eli's for lunch. It was good but not as good as it should have been. I'm still bummed that they got rid of the Turkey Waldorf sandwich. It was one of my all-time favorite sandwiches EVAH!
It's just about time to dash back to StudyLand, but first, a poll!!
Yay!
*edit*
I'm apparently smart enough to be in school but not smart enough to figure out LJ's poll system.
So, just ask the questions in comments. :)
Pretend this is an LJ poll. Ask me a question, any question. I'll answer them all.
Brief life update whilst on lunch...

What I learned in class last night:
1. Getting notice that you are getting laid off gets you a one week get-out-of-jail card on not having your homework done.
2. There are temp agencies that specialize in the graphics field so if I don't find something permanent I can temp at Photoshop
3. My favoritest teacher at school, Will the Photoshop teacher, rocks! Not only can I use him as a reference when job hunting, but he gave me the contact name of a woman he does a lot of freelance temp assignments for. And assured me that I would have no problem with her agencies Photoshop test because he wrote it.
What I learned at Work today:
1. Ya know, the computer network works a hell of a lot better when the fiber optic cables aren't damaged! I feel like I'm typing at super speed today in our data entry program because it had been getting sloooowwwwerrr and slooowwweeerrrr before they finally figured it out.
2. I'm having a really tough time giving a damn.
3. One of the vacation days I wanted to go to a Photoshop seminar was not available but the girl who has it is being transferred to Shakopee so I should be able to get it. Before I knew about the layoff the seminar would have just been neat to go to. Now it is also resume fodder.
My favorite recent quote from www.birdchick.com/blog:
"I wish I could hunt like that, zipping through the air over 200 mph and killing larger birds with my toes."
Message on www.jamesmarsters.com:
"Valentine Greetings
2-14-07 - Happy Valentines Day to all you lovers and loveless - give yourself love; that's always the best.
James"
*snorf* Yes James, and you will be in my thoughts as I "give myself love." Silly man.
And now lunch is done. Time to dive back into the wonderful world of the entering of datas. yay.
Have a wonderful day, my dear sweet minions!
Notes to myself for school

So I now have my very own copy of QuarkXPress. *sigh* I really don't like this program much. I prefer InDesign. But my Print Production 1 teacher is requiring us to use Quark for all our assignments this year. At least Quark is finally giving a decent student discount. When I took Quark about 2 or 3 years ago the studient version was over $400. I didn't buy it.
I'm just glad it showed up already so that I can finish my homework that is due on Wednesday.
Move along, nothing interesting here...
Jan. 22nd, 2007 12:50 am( boring Graphic Design stuff under here )
(no subject)
Jan. 19th, 2007 12:26 pmI'll be picking up a temporary textbook on the way home... The $100 (!) book required for History of Graphic Design was only $60 on Amazon but since I got it from one of those affiliate people I don't know how long it will actually take to get here. We need the 4th edition for class because some of the more recent stuff has been updated what with there being computers now and such. But, the Hennepin Cty Library has ONE copy of the 3rd edition which I put in a hold for. The early chapters will all be the same and it will get me by while waiting for my book to arrive. I'm totally willing to put up with just a bit of hassle to save $40.
I also have a bunch of Mix CDs that I'm working on making labels and song lists for. There is the Collected Smut Mixes since I believe I might be the only person who has *all* the mixes. Also,
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I've got a bunch of music from dibsy that I haven't imported yet because I'm trying to go through music I haven't listened to yet and clean out the crap. I've got about 2000 songs that don't have a 1-5 star rating yet. Actually it would be 2-5 star rating. I have a system of rating on the 'pod so I know what to do with them on the computer:
* I don't like it, delete it
** It is either an instrumental, or it is one I don't like but don't want to delete (part of a character or smut mix, for example)
*** It's not a favorite but I want it in my biggest playlist for random play
**** I like it more than 3 but less than 5
***** Always good. Stuff I can generally always listen to. Also, my absolute favorite stuff. Mostly fast, just a few quality slower songs.
And I've got to do some design/copy stuff for Rick's sister's husband's business. Haven't looked at it yet, but in theory it is simple stuff.
And I've got to order QuarkXPress. *sigh* I really don't like that program.
I'm tired!
Jan. 18th, 2007 10:25 am![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
But it is already Thursday and I am in a good mood.
My classes yesterday were alright. The first one is History of Graphic Design so it has the potential to have boring stretches. But it is also short: only 2.5 hours and he gave us two breaks.
The night class is the one I'm really excited about. Print Production I. I'll finally be getting a really good base knowledge of everything needed to get something ready for press! And we're gonna do field trips to printers & stuff! Since the night class is so small she's even going to try to get us a tour of the Star Tribune while they're running the next days papers. That just sounds so freakin' cool!
The downside is that the class is all QuarkXPress. She won't let us use InDesign. Print Production II is both Quark & InDesign though. *sigh* I think I'm going to have to give in and buy the student version of Quark. Bleah. At least the student price has dropped drastically from the insane price it used to be!
And, bonus, it is a good teacher that I really like rather than that "teacher" I had last semester. Yay!
