The term "slash" for gay fan fiction is derived from some of the first ones written: Kirk/Spock.
I didn't think the people who wrote it had any factual basis for it, until now... I don't remember this scene, but it's certainly slashy!

It's from the "Shore Leave" episode.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] witling for pointing it out.

The Kevin Smith/Southwest situation.
The girl Kevin was sitting next to on his flight home got in contact with him, and talks to him on SModcast HERE. The way she was also treated by Southwest is just shameful. The Southwest employees need some serious Customer Service training.
Kevin also writes more about the experience and how it was handled HERE. Gotta love the screenshots that show how SWA went into the original "apology" and changed some of the wording, with no note or citation of the change. Real professional.
The third paragraph where they originally threw the blame on the pilot:
"Our pilots are responsible for the Safety and comfort of all Customers on the aircraft and therefore, made a judgment call that Mr. Smith needed more than one seat to complete his flight."
Was changed to:
"We are responsible for the Safety and comfort of all Customers on the aircraft and therefore, we made a judgment call that Mr. Smith needed more than one seat to complete his flight."
I assume this is because the second blog they posted admitted that the pilot wasn't responsible, which therefore made the first one a lie. And we all know that when caught in a lie the ethical thing to do is retroactively change it.

An awesome article about Roger Ebert and how he is living with his cancer, and the results of his cancer treatments HERE

Leo LaPorte on TwitTV with the folks who did the "Look at me, look at him" Old Spice commercial. CGI or not?

And last, but not least, a Tweet that amused me today from @mklopez: In Holland, physically disabled people can get money from govt to be used to pay for sex. To do: 1) Move to Holland. 2) Chop off one foot.

I haven't posted about this yet because most everyone on my flist who knows Roadkill has mutual friends who have already posted about it. Also, if I don't post about it, it's not real, right?

For those not in the Twin Cities geek community, Roadkill (real name Bob) is someone I don't know very well. Every year I go to a relaxacon in Wisconsin called OmegaCon. It's a weekend full of relaxing, games, hot tubs, drinking, and food. The consuite at this convention is awesome. There's lots of yummy real food, and this consuite has always been run by Roadkill & his wife, Mrs. Roadkill (real name Susan.)
OmegaCon was the first place I met these two, and is also where I've had the majority of my interactions with them. I also see them a little bit at CONvergence.

About 2.5 weeks ago the local sci-fi community got the news that Roadkill has a brain tumor. Fucking cancer! Why can't it just hit the pedophiles and other wastes of space and start leaving the good ones alone?

The news posted on Oct 3 from an email from Susan )

The news posted on Oct 14 from an email from Susan )

And from today, again from an email from Susan: )

So they did surgery and now it's just "wait & see." Roadkill will be doing rehab. And then as soon as he can travel the Roadkills will be heading to Walt Disney World. I'm glad I'm working full time right now so that [livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I actually have some money to donate to the WDW travel fund.

*sigh*

I'm sick of fucking cancer hitting people I know.

Cheyenne Wright drew and posted this tribute to Joe yesterday. So appropriate because I can just hear Joe asking to play with the shield. He is a Kick-Ass Mystic Ninja, after all!

I listened to the episode of Wingin' It that was recorded this weekend. It was pretty good and the gang did a good job of putting out a normal show. Then at the end they were talking about Joe and how he would be gone soon and that they are going on hiatus until they feel up to recording again. Ended up trying to see through tears to do my work. :( Cancer sucks.

Damn it!

I just got word a bit ago that the world is an emptier place.

Joe Murphy, from the Farpoint Media podcasts, passed away about an hour ago. He's one of the nicest guys that I wish I'd had the pleasure to meet, but never did. :(

Fucking cancer!

The incredible Leann Mabry of the Tag in the Seam podcast has organized the Joe Murphy Memorial Fund to raise money to cover the expenses from Joe's treatment, to give back to the Hospice that took such good care of Joe at the end, and most importantly to raise money for research on Leiomyosarcoma.

About LMS )

If you have a couple bucks to spare, please consider donating to this fund. Joe was a super sweet guy who's tumor was just found/diagnosed barely 4 months ago. Now he's gone. It was inoperable and LMS is resistant to both radiation and chemotherapy.

So after hearing this news today I was on my flist. One of you is looking at surgery and possibly the 'C' word. Fuck no! I can't deal with that! You will be fine! There is no choice, you just have to be, ok?

And another of you is in hospital with gall bladder problems and having surgery to get it removed. You aren't allowed to let anything go wrong either, ok?

Joe, I'll be using my Sunspot pint glass to drink one for you tonight. Godspeed Mason Rocket, and safe journey Randy Innuendo.

Fuck.

Well shit. Last November I had posted about Joe from Wingin' It having a tumor in his abdomen. His surgery was today.
Evo just posted this update a little bit ago:

10:15 PM MST

Final update for tonight. Mike called me an hour ago, and I’ve been pondering what to write. So here goes.

The prognosis is pretty shitty. The operation is over and the doctors have decided that Joe’s cancer is inoperable. Hey — now you have an “i” word to hate.

It’s spread in too many places, is invading too many organs and has found too healthy of a blood supply. Cutting it out would simply endanger Joe, so there’s no point. They took a sizeable chunk out for for further study. With luck, this particular variety is vulnerable to either chemo or radiation therapy — cuz the knife isn’t the right tool for this job.

Docs say that he should be out and back home in a couple of days. Pray, cuss, rant, rave. Do what you need to do. With luck, there are therapies which will be helpful. More on that in the coming weeks/days when we know more and tests come back.

Dammit.

I've never met the guy, but in over a year of listening to the gang down there in Phoenix doing several different shows a week I feel like I know him.
I know that he is a good person with a good heart who doesn't deserve this.
I know that he has people all over the world pulling for him.
I know that he's got about the best support system ever in Michael, Evo, Summer and all the other folks down there at Draco-vista studios.
I just don't know if that's enough and it is just really damn unfair.
Fucking cancer.
