Quilt!

About a month ago when I mentioned working on a quilt, [livejournal.com profile] san_valentine said I should post pictures of it. Here are the pictures, along with the story of the quilt.

The quilt is a basic diamond/star pattern, with each star having two solid diamonds and two patterned diamonds.

This quilt top was pieced together decades ago by my Grandma Stelzig (my dad's mom), using scraps from the 8 kids' old clothing. The whole thing was hand pieced.

My mom was originally going to do the quilting, but only got about 3 of the circles done. She was doing a very simple pattern of just repeating the same diamond shapes in the cirlcles. I thought that was too boring so I took out the little she had done and started doing these flowers instead.

Of course, I didn't think about how many I would have to do when I started it! There are 275 circles on the quilt that need flowers quilted in. Also, I'm doing the outlines of the diamonds too. 275 of them.

I started with the very center circle and spiraled out from there. Once I hit the middle of each edge I switched to working my way from where I was done out to just one corner. When that corner is done I'll switch to the next, then the next, and then the final one.

And, of course, I've learned that it is impossible to quilt without a little help from a cat or two!

That's Gorgeous! I love quilts, but only hand made ones. anything else is just a bed spread! Quilts are made of love and memories and elbowgrease.

And that? is a fine example of what can come from those three ingredients.

that's ace. K's mum is an avid quilter, and I know from her how much work is involved. And that looks like a *big* quilt.

It's freakin' huge! I actually haven't measured it... It's at least Queen size, maybe King.

Thank you for posting the photos. That is a work of art, and of love. I don't think I'd have the patience to quilt something so large (with or without the 'help' of my cats)

What a lovely family heirloon you have there.

Well, I can't just sit and watch TV without doing *something*
My work on this goes in spurts though, where I'll go a long time without working on it at all. I've probably been working on it off & on for about 10 years now.

That is beyond impressive! My hands ache just looking at it. I know how much work goes into that kind of thing, so wow...just wow! The floral quilting really adds a nice design with elegance and dimension to an otherwise sweet and quaint pattern. It's a really fantastic juxtaposition.

By the way, the thing that touches me the most is that it's been worked on by 3 generations. That's just soooooo cool!

And people say they don't have the patience to knit. I don't have the patience to quilt. That is amazing!

Wow! I didn't realize how far you'd gotten on it! It is soooo cool! Maybe you can have my kids help you & make it a 4-generation quilt?

Wow- how gorgeous is that? Put me with the group that loves that it's a family item. I love the flower quilting!

I'm pretty sure most quilts would never be completed if there weren't a cat around to help out. Maybe they are an essential ingredient...

The quilt is absolutely gorgeous! And what a great story that goes with it too. I hope people continue to keep quilting alive - there is little that is as precious to me as the quilt my mother made for me - I know it must be the same with most people as well. :D
