I was walking home late in the evening last year and I heard a car backfiring. Then a rather scared group of young men ran past me very fast and it occurred to me that I haven't heard a car backfire outside of a movie. I quickened my pace walking home.

I have. Not often, but I have. Sound is surprisingly similar to a gunshot (which I've also heard in a neighborhood close to where we lived).

I must say that I can't really remember ever hearing one, but the sound of a (probable) gunshot did sound just like it.
