Fair post the first, Food!

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I put on bright orange t-shirts emblazoned w/the Boston Scientific logo and headed over to that strange St. Paul side of town. We were off to the State Fair!

Apparently, so was everyone else in the state... I'm never going there on a Saturday again, not even with discount tickets from Rick's work!

At some point during the day I decided I should be taking pictures of all the fantastic food concoctions that our fair has to offer. If it can be deep-fried, put on a stick, or both, it was!
Unfortunately, due to my previous 3 days of intestinal discomfort I couldn't partake in as much fair goodness as I would have liked. The first stop for [livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I was our traditional Preferred Pickle deep-fried gourmet pickles though. They are soooo good and totally worth fighting through the crowds in the food building.

I read about the Spam curds. It kind of scared me.

My new food at our fair here was Indian fry bread. Turns out it's pretty good. My staple food is bratwurst and the caramel apple tower.

Rick tried the Spam curds. He liked them. I tried one and thought it was icky.

Mmmmmm. Indian fry bread. I haven't had that in forever! It was one of the benefits of having a college roomate who was part Indian. When she took me to a powwow she insisted I try it.
My staple must have food is the cheese on a stick!

Cheese on a stick, which tastes much like a grilled cheese sammich, is one of my favorites, but I didn't have it this year. I tried not to eat too much junk food.

Most of these terrify me, but somehow the entire experience of fair food is summed up for me by the dreadful legend: Sloppy Joe on a Stick!

Hellbob tried that. He said it was nasty. I took his word for it!

It sounds just plain terrifying to me, and I've eaten deep-fried haggis voluntarily and lived to tell the tale!

Not - I hasten to assure you - that I would be in a hurry to repeat the experience.

Food on a stick is a staple of Fair Food across the midwest, I think. Although I am intrigued by Hotdish On A Stick. I'm not sure I want to know what's in that...

At the Iowa fair, if you can fry it on a stick, we have it. We have hot beef sundaes. And Beer On A Stick.

I went last night (Sunday) from 5:30 PM until 8:30 PM. Perfect weather, cool and breezy and hardly any crowds, everyone was leaving. My favorite place to eat there is Vessios (not sure if I spelt it right) by the grandstand - i always get a bucket of rigs and a piece of garlic cheese bread.

I've tried spagetti on a stick last year from the food building and it was pretty gross.

We didn't have a lot of choice on the day or time because Saturday was "Boston Scientific Day" and we had to be out of there early enough to baby-sit Rick's sister's kids that night. Not to mention the whole still not feeling completely well thing...
