It's a site where you can put your zip code in and it will tell you the closest places to get Emergency Contraception (EC), also called Plan B.
This is not the abortion pill!
EC is also known as the morning after pill.
If the condom breaks, if you get drunk and have unprotected sex, if you have sex against your will, if for any reason after having sex you are at risk of an unwanted pregnancy, EC can prevent it.
It is the same hormones as Birth Control Pills, just in a more concentrated dose.
This is something I feel should always be available to anyone who needs it.
Having EC available does not promote promiscuity and unsafe sex, it just prevents unwanted children. Condoms are still a cheaper & more reliable option. But sometimes they fail, and sometimes they aren't used.
EC is called "Plan B" because it isn't supposed to be your primary method of birth control. With good reason. If it is something you have to take, it most likely will make you nauseous as all hell for a day because of all the hormones. It's not fun, but it's better than the alternative.
So use condoms, because as a caller to the Penn Jillette radio show said, "I'm not a bigger slut because I have condoms, I'm a safer slut." but if that plan should fail, here is the link to where you can find Plan B.

Date: 2006-09-20 03:55 am (UTC)the thing that plan b does is prevent ovulation. that's how it keeps you from getting pregnant. if there is no egg, the sperm can't find it, and therefore, no pregnancy.
i believe that plan b is supposed to be easier on the system than the older forms of emergency contraception. the last time i took ec was... hm. 1993? and i did spend the day reasonably nauseated. ah! yes. plan b, much less nausea. http://ec.princeton.edu/info/ecp.html

Date: 2006-09-20 04:11 am (UTC)The ovulation thing? I'd always been told that was what birth control did. Then once I had really bad pain in my abdomen but the doc said it was ovulation. I was all "Nope. Not possible. I'm on the pill." but he said most pills don't stop ovulation, instead they prevent the egg from implanting on the uterine wall.

Date: 2006-09-20 04:18 pm (UTC)I got really lucky. I'd never even heard of such a thing, but my appointment at the campus clinic for me to get on the pill just happened to be the day after I'd had a condom break. I didn't think there was anything to do but wait and hope, but the wonderful nurse there got me the moring after pills.
(Um, but of course I'm just making this up because I was a virgin when I married Rick. Yup. Really. Hmmm. You don't believe me, do you?)
