Re: my previous post.
"I usually drink cider rather than beer, so I don't know what beers are good.

I need some suggestions of good local beer. Bonus points if it's not nationally distributed. Also, one of the guys likes really hoppy beer. The other likes dark beer. They both HATE crappy yellow American beer (Miller, Bud, etc.)"

The beer in question will be going to Arizona for the crew of Wingin' It / Slice of Sci-Fi. I have now learned that one can not send beer via the USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL. So, super extra bonus points for pointing me to a beer store with a good selection that will ship beer!  FedEx's rules are: "FedEx will accept legal shipments of wine, beer, liquor, or spirits when both the shipper and recipient are licensed wholesalers, distributors, dealers, manufacturers, retailers or importers."  UPS's are similar.
If I can't find a store to ship I shall just have to use UPS to ship "Collectible glass bottles"

I've never tried to break up a six pack from Surdyk's, so I don't know on that one, but I know they have many single bottles for sale of European imported beer. There's a Polish Peach beer that's very tasty, but it's definitely sweeter than it sounds like your friends want.

You could always buy a few six packs, send your friends some and *drink* the rest. Then you could compare notes, and it would be great conversation. See, you'd be doing it for the long distance camraderie...

So... um... I've got more ramblings on local beer.

I got so excited after I replied to the first entries that I had to make a run to Surdyk's today. Sumit MaiBock was on sale for $8.88, which is less than a twelve pack of bottles of scummy Macro Brew beer. From what you described, I bet they'd enjoy that one. MaiBock is a dark beer.

Schell is also a local beer, but I don't think it's as good as Summit and it typically costs more. They have a Caramel Bock that isn't bad, but there are better Caramel Bock's. It's not terrible beer, it's just not very special is all.

I've never had James Page beer, so I don't know anything about it. Might not be bad, it has a decent reputation.

The final local beer I would consider is Pete's Wicked Ale, which does have some uniqueness to it. I haven't had it in a long time, but I don't remember thinking there was anything wrong with it. Dunno, maybe I was drunk at the time. ;)

Cold Spring Beer is also made in Minnesota and it's not for drinking. When you see an HGTV *tip* about fertilizing, and detering bugs by pouring beer into houseplants, they mean Cold Spring. If you intentionally send your friends Cold Spring beer and sugguest that they drink the stuff, they'll think that you're deranged and that all Minnesota beer is very icky and only suitable for fertilizing plants.
