It was replaced with a new marker a few years ago. I'm guessing that the crack down the middle kept getting larger over the years & so it was a preemptive preservation type thing.

And omg! They accidentally put an apostrophe in "its"! You can see that they painted it brown to "fix" it, but it was carved in there. They displayed that wonderful typo for so many years...

I've been there! Mom (somewhere) has a picture of me and my brothers standing in the Mississippi when it's three inches deep. Maybe not literally three inches, but it's pretty small.

Lake Itasca. Pretty place. Where is the infamous marker now, since it's obviously not where it was?

'Tis at the Science Museum in St. Paul. It's the first thing you see when walking into the exhibits. I literally stopped in my tracks & said "I've seen that before!" And now Moose got to see it!
