My Fed-Ex package was waiting for me when I got home. Opened it up, and pulled out... iLife! Looked at Brian's original email w/the shipping info & sure enough he accidentally ordered the wrong one. After how much Fed-Ex annoyed me I just had to laugh.

Was going to go to the Apple store to see if it could be exchanged there and [livejournal.com profile] hellbob asked how much iLife goes for. Told him that it is the same as iWork, $79. Well, he thought iLife/GarageBand was way more expensive than that, $200 at least. So he's decided that if it's only $79 he's gonna buy a legal copy. So now instead of trying to exchange the one I got I'll just pick up iWork at the Apple store.

We watched the pilot episode of Sci-Fi's Flash Gordon. Ouch. Painfully bad. "imex. What's an imex?" [livejournal.com profile] hellbob compared Flash Gordon to a Sci-Fi Saturday feature, but without the heart & soul that makes them fun...

The Space Shuttle Endeavour landed safely this afternoon! The came home early to avoid the hurricanes an storms, and the damaged tile didn't cause any problems. Yay!

Found out on the ride up to the cabin that my [livejournal.com profile] technomonkey_m ♥ Me First & the Gimme Gimmes! You go boy!

Contemplating setting my Twitter account to protected. Not because I don't want people to be able to read my tweets, but because the random adds by people who add hundreds and thousands of twitterers annoy me, and those are always right after I make a post which would have shown up on the public timeline. I like the idea of real people finding me and adding me though. I dunno. I think they would also stop showing up on the RSS feed, but I think the only non-twitter person reading that is [livejournal.com profile] genevra.

Applied for several jobs during my emo day at home yesterday. Don't know why I never thought of it sooner, but instead of searching for the key word "photoshop" I searched for just "photo." There were a couple jobs at local custom labs that I applied for. There is one that I am really hoping calls me back because I am uber-qualified and the pay is in the range I need and since it is part time with the possiblility of full time I should hopefully be able to work it around the school schedule. Not even going to say the name though because I don't want to jinx it. I wanted that Memorial Blood Centers job that I didn't get too badly and don't want to deal w/that again. *edit* The one I was really hoping would call me back emailed me and wants me to call "at my earliest convenience." to talk about the position! Yay!

Because I was having such a bad day yesterday when [livejournal.com profile] hellbob stopped to pick up my drugs for me he also got me chocolate. Unfortunately Byerly's didn't have Vosges anymore. :(

My mood is definitely much improved today.

I have become oddly addicted to "Scott Baio is 45 and Single." No, I can't explain it, I just am.

A cool new way to see independent films that don't come to your town:
From [livejournal.com profile] poyboy's journal: Independent film Hannah Takes The Stairs is playing in NYC tomorrow, but if your city has IFC InTheaters you can watch it at home tomorrow too. )
Here in the Cities, when I put my zip code in the IFC site says that Comcast Cable has this but DirecTV doesn't. If you have Comcast and are a fan of independent film, you should look into this.

And while I'm pimping friends' stuff, y'all should go watch This Day In Alternate History if you're not already. There have been 41 episodes already. They're all about 5 minutes long or so, and they are a total riot. They are hosted by MightyMur, aka [livejournal.com profile] sailormur and HoboZero, aka [livejournal.com profile] cryptonaut. Find them HERE.

Also, are you listening to Escape Pod yet? Top notch sci-fi stories read by talented people. This is [livejournal.com profile] sfeley's baby, and he's a very good daddy! The latest episode, #119 Aliens Want Our Women, was read by the supah-sexay Leann from the TitS podcast. Go listen now.

So anyway, there's a bunch of the random stuff floating in my brain today. Yes, I was having a VERY bad day yesterday. But I am much better today. Better living through chemistry, yo.

*note* although this post has the goat-fucking tag, it does not contain any actual goat fucking. The tag still just amuses me and I wanted to use it!

Jay Moonah & Amaya Thompson of Uncle Seth turned me on to a cool new program called Simplify Media.
It basically will do the shared library function of iTunes, but with other people on the internet instead of your local network. You connect with up to 30 other users. They can browse and play the music you make available and you can do the same with theirs.
You have to invite someone/be invited to connect libraries, so random people won't be in ur library listenin' to ur tunez.

If any of y'all download it and want to hook up with me my user name on it is *surprise* HellZiggy!

Since I'm a complete snot monster right now I'm 90% sure I'm not going in to work tomorrow, so I'll have my laptop on all day which will make my music available.

Also, if you do get hooked into my library be sure to check out Uncle Seth's music.
To Be An Angel, A Little Bit More, and their cover of Both Sides, Now are some of my favorites. Amaya has a GREAT voice!

I got the CD today Casey!!! Yay! I can't wait to watch the whole thing!!
Thank you sooooooo much!

And now that I have your address I can return the favor by sending you pretties. :)

Through a Twitter friend I discovered a cool new band: Dolapdere Big Gang.
They are a Turkish band that covers English songs.
To hear their stuff click here:
Warning! MySpace page with auto-play music
Yes, MySpace pages that automatically play music are evil, but since the reason I'm sending you there is to listen to the music I'm not gonna feel bad about it!

The only way to order this album in the U.S. is through Ebay which I will be doing later this weekend. It's pretty much a guarantee that you will be hearing some of their music on Coverville in the near future too because I forwarded the link to Brian and he really liked it too. :)

Hey boys & girls! It's the First of May!

If  you don't have (or know about) the Jonathan Coulton song First of May you MUST go to this site and get it. And if you love it, drop a buck or two in the donation bin.

http://www.jonathancoulton.com/songdetails/First%20of%20May

The song lyrics are NOT work or kid friendly!

Only 56 more days here after today... (technically 58, but I'm going to be sick two days in June)

I really need to clean out my laptop's hard drive. It's a 60GB drive and I only have 6.69 GB free. That's a big improvement over yesterday when I had less than 1GB free. Couldn't even run Photoshop. *sigh*

It's mostly music too, I think. I'm going to have to start running through all the songs that have no rating and decide which ones I like and want to keep and which ones I want to dump.

The music I have in iTunes with no rating takes up over 12.5 GB.
And a lot of those are probably songs I don't like/want/need.
When I get a CD I put the whole thing in, even if I don't know all the songs. And we all know that damn few CDs have every single song is a good one! (Unless you are in a band and are reading this. I love ALL your songs, of course!) I also have some where people give me a copy of a CD and I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.

My iTunes music library is 24.35 GB. Yeah, some of that has got to go. As space becomes more valuable I'm definitely becoming pickier about the music. If I'm torn between giving a song a 3-star or a 1-star I give it the 1-star and the next time I boot up iTunes it is out of there.

Some stuff stays no matter what though. If it's a cover and i don't like it, it will get 2-star so it stays on the computer even though I won't listen to it. Yeah, I know. There's no logic to that!
hellziggy: (Default)
I feel like I have a ton of stuff to do but I don't know what... Probably a side effect of school starting.

I'll be picking up a temporary textbook on the way home... The $100 (!) book required for History of Graphic Design was only $60 on Amazon but since I got it from one of those affiliate people I don't know how long it will actually take to get here. We need the 4th edition for class because some of the more recent stuff has been updated what with there being computers now and such. But, the Hennepin Cty Library has ONE copy of the 3rd edition which I put in a hold for. The early chapters will all be the same and it will get me by while waiting for my book to arrive. I'm totally willing to put up with just a bit of hassle to save $40.

I also have a bunch of Mix CDs that I'm working on making labels and song lists for. There is the Collected Smut Mixes since I believe I might be the only person who has *all* the mixes. Also, [personal profile] stoney321 has several BtVS/AtS character mixes that she made a while ago and I have all of those now so I want to print up some kind of booklet to go with the CDs since she had wonderful posts explaining why she picked each song and which part of the series it was relating to. Once I have that done I will probably further distribute them to any local folks that want them. Either on one mp3 disc, or on separate audio if the discs are provided.

I've got a bunch of music from dibsy that I haven't imported yet because I'm trying to go through music I haven't listened to yet and clean out the crap. I've got about 2000 songs that don't have a 1-5 star rating yet. Actually it would be 2-5 star rating. I have a system of rating on the 'pod so I know what to do with them on the computer:
*  I don't like it, delete it
** It is either an instrumental, or it is one I don't like but don't want to delete (part of a character or smut mix, for example)
*** It's not a favorite but I want it in my biggest playlist for random play
**** I like it more than 3 but less than 5
***** Always good. Stuff I can generally always listen to. Also, my absolute favorite stuff. Mostly fast, just a few quality slower songs.

And I've got to do some design/copy stuff for Rick's sister's husband's business. Haven't looked at it yet, but in theory it is simple stuff.

And I've got to order QuarkXPress. *sigh* I really don't like that program.

Over a year after I first "outgrew" my 15GB iPod, I'm finally getting a newer bigger one! Yay!
[livejournal.com profile] yaaren has a 60GB one that she wanted to sell so I'll be buying that one. it would be silly for me to get one bigger than that since my computer only has a 60GB hard drive...

What should the new iPod be named? It's gotta be a Farscape name since:
Laptop = Chiana
15GB iPod = Aeryn Sun
External hard drive = Talon
Small Jump Drive = Rygel

I'd do a poll, but it's late and I'm lazy. Which name for a black 1st gen video iPod?

~ John Crichton
~ Ka D'Argo
~ Scorpius
~ Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan
~ Moya
~ 1812
~ Harvey

*edit*

Hmmm. So far only Scorpius and Harvey have been voted for. I was kind of leaning toward John Crichton, especially since my other 'pod is Aeryn. I have to admit that I put Harvey on as an after thought and while I like the name, it's not one I was considering really hard. You see, all bunnies that I see in my backyard, or anywhere really, are named Harvey. Also on Farscape, Harvey was just the version of Scorpius that was in John's head. So the name doesn't really fit for an iPod because it's not an invisible psychopathic figment of my imagination. I'm still looking at votes. I just reserve the right to ignore them!

JoCo Bonus Show
This is all very sudden I know, but: I will be playing at The Lady Killigrew Cafe in Montague, MA at 8 PM on Saturday August 19th.

John Hodgman will be your guest bartender, so be sure and order a lot of pousse-cafés.

(John Hodgman is the guy who plays the PC in the Mac ads, and he's on Daily Show too)

JC's stuff is so fun, I wish I could see him live. [livejournal.com profile] freyjakj, I have no idea if this is near you or not...

And I still haven't gotten around to making myself a Skullcrusher Mountain icon yet.

So, I'm an idiot and completely forgot to post this soon enough for anyone to do anything about it:

We have an extra ticket for TONIGHT'S Mason Jenning's concert. Anyone interested?

I've started a webpage to collect links & downloads & such for free mp3s that I find on the internets. A lot of it is distributed under creative commons licensing. Some of it is links to the site where the copyright holder has made it available.

If you find an artist you like, support them by either buying their music, or donating money, or both!

[livejournal.com profile] minervacat's Thurday Five today was top 5 favorite cover songs. Hmmm. You think I can come up with five? LOL!

My answers are here:

1. I'm gonna cheat and go with a whole genre of covers: Rap songs covered in another style. I LOVE this! Just a few of my favorites...

Straight Outta Compton, Nina Gordon (orig. NWA)
Baby Got Back, Jonathan Coulton (orig. Sir Mix-A-Lot)
Boyz-N-The Hood, Dynamite Hack (orig. NWA)
Gin & Juice, The Gourds (orig. Snoop Dogg)

2. Rock 'n' Roll, Rasputina (orig. Led Zeppelin)
The lovely Miss [livejournal.com profile] bloodlossgirl turned us on to this fabulous group!

3. Tell Me Does She Love the Bass, Lesbians On Ecstasy (orig. Like the Way I Do by Melissa Etheridge)
The took a typical Melissa Etheridge song and turned it into a dance mix. It gives the song a whole different feel.

4. My Heart Will Go On, A New Found Glory (orig. Celine Dion)
Of course, anytime it's not Celine singing, it's an improvement!

5. Time After Time, Uncle Kracker (orig. Cyndi Lauper)
This one is from the Clockstoppers soundtrack. I've always liked this song, and I just LOVE that man's voice.

I can't list just 5... I can't do it! Here is a list of runners-up!
Hurt, Johnny Cash (orig. NIN)
I Will Survive, Cake (orig. Gloria Gaynor)
Mrs. Robinson, The Lemonheads (orig. Simon & Garfunkle)
Wonderwall, Ryan Adams (orig. Oasis)
Burning Down The House, Tom Jones w/The Cardigans (orig. The Talking Heads)
The Gambler, Uncle Seth (orig. Kenny Rogers)
Tainted Love, Marilyn Manson (orig. Gloria Jones...Soft Cell's version was also a cover!)
Living For The City, Aslan (orig. Stevie Wonder)
The Boys of Summer, The Ataris (orig. Don Henley)
Eleanor Rigby, Godhead (orig. the Beatles)

So, oh readers of mine. What are your favorite cover songs? Bonus points for you if you mail an mp3 of it to [myusername] @ gmail.com
hellziggy: (Default)
Hey kids!
It's May first.
Hopefully we'll have some decent weather, because you know what starts today, right?
If you don't know what I'm talking about, you need to download this song by Jonathan Coulton. If you've got a copy of my smut mix CD, just fire up the first track.
Celebrate spring with a crazy little thing...

Got an email today with Sunspot's upcoming shows:

It's been way too long since we've hit the windiest of cities, but we'll be back in Chicago THIS FRIDAY, April 7th for our biggest show in the area yet. We'll be at The Abbey Pub and performing promptly at 10pm. Other bands include The Tallest, The Lesser Scene, and Sunday Morning Chameleon. If you'd like to come, let us know right away because advance tickets are only $5 and it's $7 at the door. That's two bucks in savings that can be used for partying!

Also, a reminder that we'll be back in the Cincy area on Saturday night at the ever awesome Chicks Rockfest. It's at The Southgate House in Newport and, ironically, we'll be in the Ballroom on Saturday night at 11:30pm. There are so many great bands performing all weekend long, we cannot wait to blow the roof off with YOU ALL this Saturday!

Jonathan Coulton, the genius who brought us The First of May, does a song a week. Last week's song was about a subject very near & dear to some of you...

Zombies!!

"All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re not unreasonable, I mean, no one’s gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re at an impasse here, maybe we should compromise:
If you open up the doors
We’ll all come inside and eat your brains"

HERE is a link to the page I put it on, or if you prefer, HERE is a link to download it directly.
If you like the song, go to J.C.'s website and purchase it or make a donation.

And for today's picture spam, I stopped at the river on my way home.

This week I am working down at the Shakopee location because [livejournal.com profile] lucky13charm took the week off so they are short a person. Today was my first time working down there. I liked it down there, and there are windows so I could tell the sun was shining. The only think I don't like about it is the distance. If it wasn't frickin' Shakopee I wouldn't mind working there on a regular basis. One of the benefits to the drive though is that it means I have to cross the Minnesota River which will make for good 100pics fodder.
I stopped for about 15 minutes today and I've got 4 photos for y'all:

It was BEAUTIFUL out today so I stopped by the river to take pictures.

And I'll even be nice & cut tag the other three for those of you who don't care... )

I've always liked this meme... This time you can blame [livejournal.com profile] alisgray for me doing it, as it's her journal I snagged it from. It's kinda like iTunes does tarot.

Put your iTunes/Winamp/WMP on shuffle. Say the following questions aloud, and press play. Use the song title as the answer to the question. NO CHEATING.

1. How does the world see me?
Love's Recovery, Indigo Girls
Not sure who/what I'm recovering from...

2. Will I have a happy life?
Color Of Her Eyes, Gear Daddies
? Doesn't really answer the question. Although it's not a happy song...

3. What do my friends think of me?
No Better Place, Fountains of Wayne
Awww. They like having me around. :)

4. Do people secretly lust after me?
Nowhere to Run, the Commitments
I'll take that as a yes!

5. How can I make myself happy?
Katamari Holiday, Katamari Damacy
Guess I should go play Katamari!

6. What should I do with my life?
Yours and Mine, Fountains of Wayne
Out of over 5000 songs it picks the same album twice? Grr.

7. Will I ever have children?
Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out, The Replacements
Well, apparently I'll have a son named Tommy.

8. What is some good advice for me?
Hell, Squirrel Nut Zippers
This is advice how?

9. How will I be remembered?
There's Your Trouble, Dixie Chicks
Doesn't bode well...

10. What's my signature dancing song?
Old Flame, Alabama
Of course, i don't dance. It requires a minimal bit of rhythm

11. What's my current theme song?
Girls on Film, Duran Duran
Well, the photo part is accurate, but I'm not so fond of photographing people.

12. What do others think is my current theme song?
Tiki God, The Presidents of the United States of America
Yes! I am a God!

13. What shall they play at my funeral?
Power of Dreams, Power of Dreams
For the ultimate sleep?

14. What type of wo/men do I like?
Ode To Groovy, Skinny Puppy
This is how y'all can tell I'm not cheating, becuase it would have been Vampire Love

15. How's my love life?
Confidant, Mason Jennings
So, apparently if you want to know you have to ack!
hellziggy: (Default)
Yay! I was just paying bills. That part sucks, but the cool thing is that I just made a payment on the financing for Chiana. The last payment! Yay! She is 100% paid for now. :)
And to celebrate I give you A Laptop Like You

"It's not your CD slot
Or the Unix on which you are based
You make my lap hot
Cause underneath your aluminum case there's love
And I forgive your strange one-button mouse
I forgive the way your keyboard leaves marks on your screen
I can overlook a fault or two
For a laptop like you..."
