Have you heard about this yet?
Animal Planet is doing a series called Meerkat Manor that follows one group of Meerkats. It's sooooooooooo cute!

I just listened to an episode of The Dragon Page's Cover to Cover, with Michael & Evo ( http://www.dragonpage.com/archives/cover_to_cover_219.html )[remember kids, no fancy-schmancy links when I post from work...]
and they were interviewing author Naomi Novik who just had the 3rd book of her trilogy released.
One fun thing I learned in the interview is that for years before writing a novel she wrote fanfic (and admitted it!) When Michael asked which fandom she was non-commital saying that she had written for about 20 different fandoms over time.
I loved this!
There are some really awesome writers out there doing fanfic and it's nice to see that their talent can be recognised by getting printed in the "real world." I know there are several people on my friends list who write way better than some of the so called professional writers I have read.

I've started a webpage to collect links & downloads & such for free mp3s that I find on the internets. A lot of it is distributed under creative commons licensing. Some of it is links to the site where the copyright holder has made it available.

If you find an artist you like, support them by either buying their music, or donating money, or both!

Hey kids!
It's May first.
Hopefully we'll have some decent weather, because you know what starts today, right?
If you don't know what I'm talking about, you need to download this song by Jonathan Coulton. If you've got a copy of my smut mix CD, just fire up the first track.
Celebrate spring with a crazy little thing...

And if you like the song, go give Jonathan Coulton some money.

[livejournal.com profile] chebutykin, I thought of you when I found this site...

I did a google search on Slow Lorises to find a picture because [livejournal.com profile] frozendragon was talking about the critters at the zoo that she thought were cute and I thought it sounded like a description of the Slow Loris. I was right, and we both looked at the pictures and went "aaaaawwwwww!!!!"
But then the first article listed caught my eye. It was part of a venomous animal website. WTF? So I clicked it and it took me here: Damn! These little guys are cute! Color me shocked though to find out that the Lorises are poisonous...
"The lorises are actually toxic! On the inside of their elbows, sebaceous tissue secretes a toxin (like sweat pores, which is rather fitting since the toxic mixture smells remarkably like sweaty socks). The lorises take it into their mouth and deliver it in the bite."
I started reading the rest of the guy's site too and it's pretty darn interesting.

Brokeback Hospital

Yes, it's another Brokeback Mountain parody trailer. But there have been so many gay snarky undertones between House & Wilson that this trailer could be reality!

Got an email today with Sunspot's upcoming shows:

It's been way too long since we've hit the windiest of cities, but we'll be back in Chicago THIS FRIDAY, April 7th for our biggest show in the area yet. We'll be at The Abbey Pub and performing promptly at 10pm. Other bands include The Tallest, The Lesser Scene, and Sunday Morning Chameleon. If you'd like to come, let us know right away because advance tickets are only $5 and it's $7 at the door. That's two bucks in savings that can be used for partying!

Also, a reminder that we'll be back in the Cincy area on Saturday night at the ever awesome Chicks Rockfest. It's at The Southgate House in Newport and, ironically, we'll be in the Ballroom on Saturday night at 11:30pm. There are so many great bands performing all weekend long, we cannot wait to blow the roof off with YOU ALL this Saturday!

Jonathan Coulton, the genius who brought us The First of May, does a song a week. Last week's song was about a subject very near & dear to some of you...

Zombies!!

"All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re not unreasonable, I mean, no one’s gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re at an impasse here, maybe we should compromise:
If you open up the doors
We’ll all come inside and eat your brains"

HERE is a link to the page I put it on, or if you prefer, HERE is a link to download it directly.
If you like the song, go to J.C.'s website and purchase it or make a donation.

This song is distributed under an AttributionRequired-NonCommercial-Sharealike Creative Commons 2.5 license. You may redistribute the mp3 as long as you credit the creator.

And for today's picture spam, I stopped at the river on my way home.

This week I am working down at the Shakopee location because [livejournal.com profile] lucky13charm took the week off so they are short a person. Today was my first time working down there. I liked it down there, and there are windows so I could tell the sun was shining. The only think I don't like about it is the distance. If it wasn't frickin' Shakopee I wouldn't mind working there on a regular basis. One of the benefits to the drive though is that it means I have to cross the Minnesota River which will make for good 100pics fodder.
I stopped for about 15 minutes today and I've got 4 photos for y'all:

It was BEAUTIFUL out today so I stopped by the river to take pictures.

And I'll even be nice & cut tag the other three for those of you who don't care... )

I am feeling linkarific today! It's been a while since I've done one of these posts showing you the cool & funny stuff I find on the internets. Enjoy!

1. Who knew? A Smallville newsite has news that will interest you Doctor Who fans on my flist... Christopher Eccleston has been signed to appear as Zod!

2. Remember the caffeine soap that came out a few years ago? Well they've come up with another way for you to get your caffeine buzz without having to ingest either sugar or evil artificial sweeteners like nutra-sweet: Buzzaire - Metered Dose Caffeine Inhaler

3. Y'all know I love Coverville. The latest episode (#194) is actually all original songs instead. They are the songs where the version we all know is actually the cover and most people have never heard the original. You can download the mp3 directly by clicking here.

4. And I know one of you doesn't need this link, having just announced his plans for a Vegas Elvis wedding, but for those of you still looking for your better half, Google wants to help. Google Romance. "When you think about it, love is just another search problem. And we’ve thought about it. A lot. Google Romance™ is our solution."

5. Slashdot has redesigned their page, giving it a much needed face lift!

6. Are you subscribed to the Astronomy Picture of the Day yet? Today's was really cool!

7. Finally! An answer to our need for a television resource. It's like IMDB and Wikipedia had a baby! TeeVeePedia

8. How Stuff Works has a really cool article on animated tattoos!

And now I've gotta run. [livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I are going to go check out a furniture bankruptcy sale to see if we can find a cool sectional sofa cheap! And then tonight we're gonna have yummy Irish food at Kip's Pub with Jeanine & Julie! Yay!

*edit*
*pout*
No comments on all my wonderful April Fools links? I don't love you people any more & so I'm gonna go use Google Romance to find new internet friends!

Yay! I was just paying bills. That part sucks, but the cool thing is that I just made a payment on the financing for Chiana. The last payment! Yay! She is 100% paid for now. :)
And to celebrate I give you A Laptop Like You

"It's not your CD slot
Or the Unix on which you are based
You make my lap hot
Cause underneath your aluminum case there's love
And I forgive your strange one-button mouse
I forgive the way your keyboard leaves marks on your screen
I can overlook a fault or two
For a laptop like you..."

Censorship

I love my Google searches. But all this talk about the censorship in China? It just makes me wonder how much trust we can put into searches here. How are we gonna know that something has been censored out? How will we know when it's Google lying to us?

Here are the results of two Google image searches. The first is at the US site we usually all use: Tiananmen Square

But if you go to google.cn and do the same search, this is what you get: Tiananmen Square

OMG!
Someone wants to kill the world. They put the Star Wars Holiday Special up on YouTube!

Judging by the length it's the whole dreadful thing.

Curious...

So, just curious. Do any of y'all use del.icio.us?
Now that I've been using them for a while I'm completely addicted to using tags in my journal. (although I've been a big ol' procrastinator about tagging the previous 3 years of entries!)
I really like the way my bookmarks are currently set up in Safari, but I'm thinking that it would be nice to find stuff from any computer.
But aren't del.icio.us tags public? So what if I tagged my bank's homepage? Obviously people wouldn't be able to log into my accounts, but I don't really want everyone to know where I bank, what credit cards I have, who my phone company is, who my electric company is, etc. They're not secret or anything. It's just not something that one should advertise.
Thoughts?

Adobe is doing a public beta of their new software, Lightroom

I literally just downloaded it and opened it, so I can't tell you anything about how it works yet, but hey, it's free! :)

"Project: Lightroom is Adobe’s effort to engage the professional photography community in a new way, giving you the opportunity to kick the tires and shape the feature set of a new tool being created just for you. Ultimately, we want Lightroom to be truly built from the ground up by photographers, for photographers, helping solve your unique workflow challenges.

We're releasing a preview build now so that you have plenty of time to give us feedback on what’s working for you, and what isn't. Your participation is important. So, don’t delay. Download now and send us your feedback before the Lightroom Beta 2 build expires June 30, 2006.

To learn more, check out the Lightroom Beta 2 Overview and Getting Started with the Develop Module video below which will help get you up and running on Lightroom.

Note: Although initially available as a beta for Macintosh, Lightroom will later support both the Windows and Macintosh platforms. Sign-up to be notified when the Windows version becomes available."
