The MN Zoo has a deal with other zoos where they get to keep every other dolphin that is born at the zoo.
So Shadow left. The next dolphin would've been kept, but it died shortly after birth. DJ was the next so he left. Spree stays, and then Harley would've left eventually.
And of course there's the whole "Don't want them to inbreed" thing.
Ayla's on birth control because they don't want to possibly have the scoliosis passed on to her offspring.
