I think it might be because it was the year I graduated. When I look at 1986, for example, I know a lot more of them. In 1988 I started college in the fall and I really don't remember listening to the radio much freshman year, unlike high school, where not only did I listen to a lot more music, but I spent a LOT more time in a car where there was always a radio on.
