Zoooooooo!!!!!!!!

Miss [livejournal.com profile] kniblet called last night with news that made me very happy. When we go to Chicago in March she's got a behind the scenes tour of Lincoln Park Zoo scheduled! Yay! Her friend Dominic is a vet there. [livejournal.com profile] kniblet must really love me since she doesn't care for zoos. :) In fact, she said that Dominic asked her if she was going to just drop me off. LOL.
But, as payback for making her go to a zoo, she's going to make me eat brussel sprouts. I've never in my life ever eaten a brussel sprout so I don't know if that's a bad thing or not. [livejournal.com profile] dibsy was apparently quite amused that I'd never tried them. Heck, I didn't think I'd ever even seen one live and in person until [livejournal.com profile] hellbob reminded me that [livejournal.com profile] chebutykin cooked them once when she was living here.

I'd eat liver for a behind-the-scenes tour of the LP zoo, and I HATE liver. I also am not fond of brusselssprouts, but they're fairly innocuous.

One of the things I really miss about Chicago? I lived in Lincoln Park, and the damned zoo is open all the time. I would walk thru it on my way to work. Nothing like seeing seals frolicking at 8 am to make your day a little brighter!

I have never actually eaten brussel sprouts either!

Would it help if I said we were going to cook them with bacon and chestnuts?

Well here's a little something extra to brighten your day.

I've said this many times, in fact probably every time that brussel sprouts have been mentioned since the sixteen years ago that I last ate them.

The last time that I ate brussel sprouts, I was nursing and they gave my baby gas. She cried most of the night, I have not since touched a brussel sprout.

I like liverwurst, but not regular liver.
I've only been to Chicago once and that was on the way through on the way to the International Science Fair. The only places we went were the Field Museum and Shedd's Aquarium. Then I was also in the outskirts a couple times. This will be my first time actually visiting the city. And I always want to go to the zoo when I'm in a new city!

And you actually like vegetables. Yay! I'm not a freak!

Yes! Bacon! (Did your mom call while you were typing that?)

*grin*
Nice! You really know how to treat a girl.
*smooch*

But Nicky is going to use bacon when she fixes them. Bacon is good, right?

[identity profile] kniblet.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Not this time. It must only work when I say it out loud.

[identity profile] mle292.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Bacon is good, right?

I think that a vegetarian might not be best suited to answer that question. I do remember bacon fondly, but it doesn't have the appeal that it once did.

See, the thing about brussel sprouts is that they're not bad if they're cooked appropriately, which I expect is what you'll have.

Overcooked brussel sprouts are slimy and somewhat snot-like.

I love brussel sprouts! Only did I love them when I was an adult, though, because my mom used to over cook them so that they were totally devoid of all flavor.

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
If Kathy had ever mad them they would also have been overcooked and totally devoid of all flavor. :)

We usually steam ours. However, for special occasions we use this recipe.

[identity profile] freyjakj.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo - bacon, shallot, brussel sprout combo sound excellent

[identity profile] kniblet.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically, we only made it once. And [livejournal.com profile] killerjoe did the actual cooking.

If you use the recipe, they way overestimate on the amount of sprouts.

I have a nephew now!!!!! :D

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yay!!!!! What's his name? And does he like brussel sprouts?
