One heck of a retirement

When I am 87 years old I hope I'm spry enough to be able to handle a trip to the South Pole.

To take part in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Scott Base (New Zealand) in Antarctica, Sir Edmund Hillary flew down on January 18th, 2007, for what is probably his last trip to the Antarctic Continent.

I hadn't realized he was even still alive until [livejournal.com profile] mcpenguin mentioned him being down there. The man has certainly had an interesting life!

He was the first person to ever stand on both poles as well as Mt. Everest. He is also the only living person pictured on New Zealand's currency.

Damn! He must have incredibly long legs!
And flexibility beyond belief! O.O

Wow. I didn't know that he was still alive, either. He is one of those historical figures that is, y'know, historical. That is awesome. Thanks for posting about this Ziggy.

P.S. ...

Don't hurt me! :D

Quite a remarkable man he is, that's true. It is still disputed though who stood first on the top of Mt.Everest, Hillary or Tenzig Norgay. When they came down they actually claimed to have done it simultaneously.

When we're 87 we'll go together.

But you'll still be older. :D

You are in quite an odd mood today, aren't you?

Since friending mcpenguin I've just become fascinated with Antarctica!

Poorly worded on my part. It wasn't meant that he was the first of all of those. I meant that he was the first that had accomplished all three.

Yeah, but we'll have your young whippersnapper of a husband to take care of us! He'll only be 84. :)

Odd? Rascally. Rascally. :D

[identity profile] kniblet.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. And yours will probably still be sturdy enough to carry our luggage. (And us, should the need arise.)

Surely that's wascally?

What?

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Eid somebody say wabbit? :)

[identity profile] kniblet.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Wabbit? Where?

[identity profile] mr-felis.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually got that. poorly worded on my part it seems ;-) Only pointing out that popular history seems sadly to have forgotten about Tenzig while rightly celebrating Hillary.
