Font Dork

I had forgotten how funny I was until [profile] boliviafang put my comment that she had written down in her journal.
If you are not a Font Dork it will probably not only not be funny, but also not make sense.

from [profile] boliviafang's journal:

So the only quote I actually wrote down from that evening is such an industry-specific one (which, admittedly, is part of its humor) that it will only be funny to about three people I know, only two of whom are on LJ:

"Papyrus is freakin' everywhere. It's like the new Comic Sans."
~[personal profile] hellziggy

Trust me, that's hilarious.

It is both funny and sadly, sadly true. My mom has taken to it.

heh!

[identity profile] boliviafang.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! A quoted quote! .. a quote quote... a quoted quotable quote ... hmm

*dizzy*

..ARGH! Now the word "quote" doesn't even look right!

*has to go lie down*

OMG, I just griped at my 18 year old brother-in-law for using Papyrus the other day. I called him trite and generic and he immediately changed it! (after I told him what trite meant LOL)

Damn those fickle FontGeeks!

I shall never forsake my beloved Comic Sans!

[identity profile] freyjakj.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I recently added Papyrus to my own journal page, AND it has been a favorite font of mine for years.

Er...I have not noticed it everywhere, though. O.o Mayhaps I am looking at the wrong everywheres?

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! I broke BoliviaFang! Ooops!

[identity profile] boliviafang.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
*whirr*
*fizz*
*pop*

[identity profile] scubagrrl.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm much more familiar with calligraphic and historical fonts. I'm a little behind the times with printed ones.

[identity profile] jenwolf.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I got the joke, but probably only because I've taken Typography like, three times now. And I admit, my first webpage was done in Comic Sans. (*shame*)

[identity profile] boliviafang.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Papyrus is a pretty font. One of my favorite applications of it was on a personal web page. It's not that it doesn't have great uses, we're just sick of seeing it on, say, menus and annual reports.

[identity profile] kniblet.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd just like to state for the record that I made [livejournal.com profile] boliviafang (or was it you?) repeat it three times before I gave up and admitted I hadn't a clue what you were talking about.

[identity profile] freyjakj.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'd have to agree that I would be a little amused annoyed to see it on something like an annual report! lol It is pretty but obviously not entirely easy to read.

My dad LOVES Comic Sans for his ebay auctions. There could be worse choices. :)

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Eek! No Comic Sans!

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Papyrus has its uses... Just not everyone's do-it-yourself logo.

You will appreciate the discussion that led to my comment... The menu at Sawatdee had Enviro on it. I was trying to decide what to order when all of a sudden I went, "Killer Bunnies!" Also, the previous evening I had just noticed that P.F. Changs uses Enviro for their logo. But seeing my comment led to [livejournal.com profile] boliviafang saying that she was used to being the only one who recognised fonts. Which led to Font Geekiness.

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
My big issue w/Papyrus is that it is used by everyone who wants a logo but doesn't want to pay to get one designed. So they just use the "fancy & different" font that is in their MS Word.

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Luddite!

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, at least it was your *first* page rather than your *latest* page! :)

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hee hee! We'd probably have the same reaction to doctor things!

[identity profile] scubagrrl.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have an Ipod either.

[identity profile] hellziggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Or even a user pic!
How do you survive????

[identity profile] nextian-cutie.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
ah, I see...I'm also a bit of a Font Geek. (Yes, I BOUGHT my font for my portrait studio logo!)

But you see, you can't really be a member of NAPP without being a bit of a Font Geek, really...

And that's funny about Enviro popping up all over the place. I think it's very interesting how people really identify a brand name with the font. Just goes to show the power of graphic design!

[identity profile] nextian-cutie.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
My chiropractor used to use it on all his patient handouts! In all sizes! Papyrus is one thing as a headline (usually very pretty) but an entirely other thing at 11pt or smaller! Talk about hard to read! YIKES!

Several of us patients talked to the office assistant and had her speak to him about it. He finally changed it. Now he uses some scripty handwritten-style font I'm not familiar with as the headline and Arial as the body font. Thank goodness, now we can actually READ what he's giving us! LOL

Ha ha - Yeah, I could see that happening.

[identity profile] freyjakj.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
That was me. :-)

[identity profile] scubagrrl.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm... you're right. I know you sent me one but I'm just not quite sure where to put it. :)
