Reading and posting on LJ improves my mood. I should remember this. I miss you all, even though I see a lot of you on the Facebook and the Twitters.

Getting out to see people improves my mood. I should remember this. I had a FABULOUS time at the State Fair last night. First I took pictures of farm animals and stuff. Then I watched a set & a half of Martin Zellar. It was actually 3/4 of the Gear Daddies because both Nick & Randy were there. Then [livejournal.com profile] 7thstranger & I walked & chatted as I took more pictures and I ate some cheese on a stick.

Finding out that a friend has died does not improve my mood. [livejournal.com profile] gingerpook lost her battle with cancer this morning. You'll be missed Ginger.

Yeah, last week was quite the roller coaster, with extreme highs and extreme lows.

The low was, of course, losing Gabriel. But, out of this came a confirmation of something I already knew. I have the most awesome friends, both online and in real life. So many sweet & touching comments from y'all here, and over on Facebook, and on Twitter. We also got a half dozen cards and 3 bouquets of flowers. Our neighbor Tammy planted a hosta for Gabe back where we buried him.

It's been tough, but Monday really was the worst day. It's gotten better. The sadness hits at weird times though. Like when I put the carpet cleaner away under the sink. I started crying because I wouldn't be cleaning up cat barf a couple times a week. Not that I miss the barf, just the barfer.

Lump seems unfazed. We expected that.

And then the highs. I know I mentioned the NASA Tweetup that I got picked for. I don't think I posted anything since then though. I'm going! Although incredibly jealous, [livejournal.com profile] hellbob said that I shouldn't miss it because it's the opportunity of a lifetime. So I changed my plane ticket to fly down Wednesday and will be spending most of the day Thursday at Kennedy Space Center. The whole rest of the crew ([livejournal.com profile] hellbob, [livejournal.com profile] genevra, monkeys, etc) will be watching the launch from a river boat, and will also go on a bit of a nature cruise.

I've got my camera gear sorted out for the trip. My giant lens is going w/me in my carryon and I've got a carbon fiber tripod rental set up down in Orlando. I'm sort of nervous about going to meet such a huge group of people where I don't know anyone, but at least we can get to know each other on Twitter first. And of the 3 other people I've learned of that are going down from Minneapolis, one of them is actually on the same flight as me. I haven't met her yet so that could be good or bad! LOL. We're even going to give her a ride to the airport with us most likely. I just wish we could have brought a plus one so that I could have [livejournal.com profile] hellbob there with me for the launch. I'm going to miss getting to see it with him. :( Moose is awesome, but he's no Rick.

Well OK, not exactly doing science. But geeking out over science. That counts, right?

While I've been an LJ slacker I've been sitting over here getting all excited about the fact that in less than a month I'M GOING TO SEE A FREAKING SPACE SHUTTLE LAUNCH!!!!! (Because it WILL NOT be delayed. Right? RIGHT?!)

Discovery makes a safe landing tomorrow. Then they will start moving Atlantis to the launch pad at 6:00 pm tomorrow evening. I assume they will be using that super awesome crawler that I saw on Dirty Jobs. (I ♥ Mike Rowe)

Our group that will be there on launch day now includes me, [livejournal.com profile] hellbob, [livejournal.com profile] genevra, [livejournal.com profile] akdar & the Monkeys, our friend Mark & his girlfriend Sarah, and HellDad! We're all traveling on different days & times and staying at different places, but we'll all be there for the launch, hopefully on the Causeway.

Our dad was so obviously jealous that we were gonna see a shuttle launch that [livejournal.com profile] genevra & I are covering his costs. It really is the least we can do for the man that made sure that the movies we saw at the theater as children were things like Star Wars, Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan, and E.T.!

We don't have our tickets for Causeway Launch Viewing yet. *sigh*
The web site *used* to say Space shuttle launch viewing tickets typically go on sale four to six weeks prior to the scheduled launch date. Now it says three to six weeks prior. It changed about a week and a half ago. This week is 3 weeks prior, so I've got the ticket page set as my homepage so that I'll hopefully see as soon as they go on sale. This is a once in a lifetime thing for me, I want to be as close as possible!!!

Speaking of once in a lifetime, I'm trying to decide if I want to take pictures of the launch or not... LOL! Just f**king with you. Of course I'm going to take pictures. I'm planning to bring my super giant monster 400mm 2.8 lens with me. After all, if I'm going to be 6 miles from the launch site, I need a little bit of a zoom. I don't have a tripod I can take with me though because mine is just too big & heavy. The current plan is to rent a carbon fiber one from Lens Pro To Go and have it shipped to our timeshare where we are spending the first night. Then I can use it the whole time we're down there and send it back before we fly home.

I just signed up for this today:

NASA Hosts the Ultimate Tweetup at Space Shuttle Launch in Florida

For a second time, @NASA Twitter followers are invited to view a launch in person.

NASA is hosting this Tweetup for 150 people on May 13-14 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The two-day event will provide NASA Twitter followers with the opportunity to view the shuttle launch and speak with shuttle technicians, engineers, astronauts and managers. The Tweetup will include a "meet and greet" session to allow participants to mingle with fellow Tweeps and the staff behind the tweets on @NASA.

How awesome would that be if I was one of the 150 people chosen? It is just for one person though, I wouldn't be able to bring a guest. I'd feel a little guilty about abandoning the rest of the family for something so awesome, but I wouldn't let that stop me. Besides, they pick on me about Twitter. If they Twittered they could enter too. Despite the no guest rule, I would be sneaking one in - a certain adventurous little Moose! I'll know by the 22nd if I'm one of the lucky 150 picked. Fingers crossed!

To Infinity, and Beyond!

This is from the website Visual Culture. Yeah, I might be right there in the middle.

And then there is this one from Great White Snark that Chris Hardwick posted in his Nerdist blog. On this one I'm firmly in the Geek category with frequent wanderings over into Nerd.

This feels like it's been a very long day.

Twitter, Tweetdeck, and the search for something new )

Geeks + Minneapolis = w00tstock 2.3 )

The next 3 months ROCK! )

Video of the all black penguin! Only 13 seconds, but it should be enough to shut up all the "It's Photoshopped!" idiots, right? (Um, the video is longer than 13 seconds, but the penguin clip itself is only 13 seconds)

Who's the black private dick That's a sex machine to all the chicks? )

OK, this has all turned out much longer than planned. Let's throw a few LJ cuts on up there.
And now that I've taken this short break to babble at y'all, it's back into the design world for me. I'm putting together a newspaper ad for work.
hellziggy: (Default)
Well, I'm finally starting to get phone & laptop skins put up on Etsy!
My shop is here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/SSSkins
yes, I only have 2 designs up so far. I'm planning on adding a bunch more. I just have to go through and plug the pictures into the templates so I've got images to put up. If you are interested in one and have a particular picture of mine in mind, just let me know and I can be sure to do that one sooner rather than later.

You know how in Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog if you hit the laundromat at the right time you'll find Nathan Fillian and Neil Patrick Harris fighting over Felicia Day? Well, not at my laundromat. :( The place actually isn't too bad though. And we really don't have to spend too much time there since our washer still works. It's only about 1/4 mile away, so we just haul our baskets of clean wet laundry in, and it only costs a buck or two. I would much rather have a working dryer in the basement though. :-/

Wisconsin has seceded from the nation. Ok, maybe not in real life, but in our 10 Days in the USA game it has. When we were playing this weekend after one game Rick asked who was hoarding Wisconsin because it had never come up in the draw pile. That's when we realized that none of us had seen it at all. A quick check of the cards, and sure enough, no Wisconsin. The folks at Out of the Box are so awesome though. I pretty much got an immediate response from Leah saying to just email her my mailing address and they'll send a replacement piece.

I just LOVED last nite's Big Bang Theory. Bazinga! I watched Lost tonight w/[livejournal.com profile] hellbob and that 2 hours just flew by. Hopefully at some point they will start answering questions instead of just creating new ones!

Even though there hasn't been a decision made about me (and hopefully Rick) going to the Phoenix Comic Con I started looking around at air ticket prices. It really sucks that it is on a holiday weekend, as it raises all the prices just a little bit. The con isn't even really using the holiday weekend. It goes Thurs-Sun, so the Monday holiday is a moot point. Right now Southwest Airlines isn't the cheapest option, but they seem to have sales fairly often. And I have to remember that if other airlines are just a little cheaper, the checked bag fee may make it essentially the same. At least if we decide to go the con itself is really cheap to register for: only $30!

So, on Twitter I joined that FourSquare location that you're at thingy. That was Sunday nite. Sometime Monday nite I got the Twitter email saying that due to possible phishing activity my password had been reset and to go make a new one. Nothing online has pointed to FourSquare, but since it was literally the next day after I gave them my password, they aren't getting the new one! I'll still update through the app though. It only took 3 checkins for me to become the mayor of West Photo.

Even though I don't want to ever auto publish my tweets to LJ, if I were to use one of those programs could I set it to always do the post as private? I don't feel like I need to broadcast everything, especially when it's one side of a conversation, but it would be nice to have a record of my tweets since they're not permanent like LJ.

Pulp Fiction screenwriter Roger Avary recently plead guilty to vehicular manslaughter & drunken driving for a car crash that injured his wife and killed a friend.

I started following his Twitter account after a mention by his friend & Beowolf co-writer Neil Gaiman.

For the last month Roger's Twitter feed was updated with one tweet per day, from jail. It was never mentioned how he was getting the tweets out there.

It was a fascinating read. Neil Gaiman tweeted about it to his 1.3 million followers: My friend @AVARY is tweeting from the inside. It's riveting, horrible strange. Jail in 140 character lumps.
Unfortunately, shortly after that the story of Avary tweeting from jail hit the media.

His latest tweet was: "#34 is 'rolled up' to a higher security facility for exercising his first amendment rights. The truth he has discovered is too dangerous."

When the story got people looking into trying to figure out how he was tweeting, it was discovered that he was actually serving his sentence in a furlough program rather than in jail. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-avary28-2009nov28,0,3500921.story That's changed, and he really is in jail now.

So if he wasn't really in jail 24/7, were his tweets real, or fiction? I have no way of knowing.
Will he/can he keep tweeting? Only 72 people will know for sure, because his Twitter account is now set to protected. *sigh*

Real or not, his jailhouse tweets were a fascinating read. I'm going to copy & paste them here in case they get deleted from teh internets.

Nightly, every few hours like clockwork, a guard's flashlight beam strikes #34's face, perhaps to ensure lack of proper rest and exhaustion. )

Even if these tweets were fiction, I'd love to see the 140 character per day story continue to play out.

from @waitwait (The official NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me twitter acct):
Guest this week: Judd Apatow. In honor of him, we're doing the show stoned. Or, I should say: MORE stoned. /PDS.
(The /PDS means it was Peter Sagal. A bunch of the WWDTM guys use that account)

from Leverage's @BethJRiesgraf:
Dear Stranger, Please don't perch uncomfortably close, offer me drugs, or come back to ask for directions. ever again.

from @scottmccloud:
Even his BEES are winning awards now. #ohwhoelse
This one is referencing the fact that Neil Gaiman has not only won Hugo, Nebula, Locus, Bram Stoker, World Fantasy, and Eisner Awards as well as this year's Newbery Medal, but now the honey produced from his bee hives that he keeps with @birdchick just took TWO blue ribbons at the county fair!

from writer/crazy person @warrenellis:
i have taken some pills and now my balls are glowing WHY WON'T YOU LOVE ME I MAKE MY BALLS GLOW FOR YOU
No, I don't know what it means either.

I just logged in to the computer after getting home and saw that TwitterFriend & FarPoint podcast friend C.A. Sizemore lost his wife suddenly and unexpectedly this morning.
The Tribe has already started a fund to help him out. If you have a few extra bucks, please consider donating something.

My Fed-Ex package was waiting for me when I got home. Opened it up, and pulled out... iLife! Looked at Brian's original email w/the shipping info & sure enough he accidentally ordered the wrong one. After how much Fed-Ex annoyed me I just had to laugh.

Was going to go to the Apple store to see if it could be exchanged there and [livejournal.com profile] hellbob asked how much iLife goes for. Told him that it is the same as iWork, $79. Well, he thought iLife/GarageBand was way more expensive than that, $200 at least. So he's decided that if it's only $79 he's gonna buy a legal copy. So now instead of trying to exchange the one I got I'll just pick up iWork at the Apple store.

We watched the pilot episode of Sci-Fi's Flash Gordon. Ouch. Painfully bad. "imex. What's an imex?" [livejournal.com profile] hellbob compared Flash Gordon to a Sci-Fi Saturday feature, but without the heart & soul that makes them fun...

The Space Shuttle Endeavour landed safely this afternoon! The came home early to avoid the hurricanes an storms, and the damaged tile didn't cause any problems. Yay!

Found out on the ride up to the cabin that my [livejournal.com profile] technomonkey_m ♥ Me First & the Gimme Gimmes! You go boy!

Contemplating setting my Twitter account to protected. Not because I don't want people to be able to read my tweets, but because the random adds by people who add hundreds and thousands of twitterers annoy me, and those are always right after I make a post which would have shown up on the public timeline. I like the idea of real people finding me and adding me though. I dunno. I think they would also stop showing up on the RSS feed, but I think the only non-twitter person reading that is [livejournal.com profile] genevra.

Applied for several jobs during my emo day at home yesterday. Don't know why I never thought of it sooner, but instead of searching for the key word "photoshop" I searched for just "photo." There were a couple jobs at local custom labs that I applied for. There is one that I am really hoping calls me back because I am uber-qualified and the pay is in the range I need and since it is part time with the possiblility of full time I should hopefully be able to work it around the school schedule. Not even going to say the name though because I don't want to jinx it. I wanted that Memorial Blood Centers job that I didn't get too badly and don't want to deal w/that again. *edit* The one I was really hoping would call me back emailed me and wants me to call "at my earliest convenience." to talk about the position! Yay!

Because I was having such a bad day yesterday when [livejournal.com profile] hellbob stopped to pick up my drugs for me he also got me chocolate. Unfortunately Byerly's didn't have Vosges anymore. :(

My mood is definitely much improved today.

I have become oddly addicted to "Scott Baio is 45 and Single." No, I can't explain it, I just am.

A cool new way to see independent films that don't come to your town:
From [livejournal.com profile] poyboy's journal: Independent film Hannah Takes The Stairs is playing in NYC tomorrow, but if your city has IFC InTheaters you can watch it at home tomorrow too. )
Here in the Cities, when I put my zip code in the IFC site says that Comcast Cable has this but DirecTV doesn't. If you have Comcast and are a fan of independent film, you should look into this.

And while I'm pimping friends' stuff, y'all should go watch This Day In Alternate History if you're not already. There have been 41 episodes already. They're all about 5 minutes long or so, and they are a total riot. They are hosted by MightyMur, aka [livejournal.com profile] sailormur and HoboZero, aka [livejournal.com profile] cryptonaut. Find them HERE.

Also, are you listening to Escape Pod yet? Top notch sci-fi stories read by talented people. This is [livejournal.com profile] sfeley's baby, and he's a very good daddy! The latest episode, #119 Aliens Want Our Women, was read by the supah-sexay Leann from the TitS podcast. Go listen now.

So anyway, there's a bunch of the random stuff floating in my brain today. Yes, I was having a VERY bad day yesterday. But I am much better today. Better living through chemistry, yo.

*note* although this post has the goat-fucking tag, it does not contain any actual goat fucking. The tag still just amuses me and I wanted to use it!

I've got a twitter account set up. (my name on there is HellZiggy)
One thing I've found with it is a website called Twittervision where the newest tweets show up on a google map.
This can be useful, as it is how I found that Jay Moonah from the band Uncle Seth has a twitter account.
It can also be amusing with some of the random stuff you see, like this tweet:
"I almost sent a tweet during sex but I got caught and the phone was taken away. Damn it."

After hearing about it so many places I finally signed up for twitter yesterday. Not sure yet what I think since I can't really utilize it fully at work.  Also, I've only got 9 'friends' right now and 4 of them are my 'followers'.
(I also just acquired some Italian guy as a follower... I can't read half his tweets and the other half aren't really interesting...)
If you are looking for me there, my user id is hellziggy, of course!
