I fly to Phoenix tomorrow! \0/

I'm going down for the Phoenix ComiCon.
It's full of awesome guests: http://www.phoenixcomicon.com/

Including my beloved James Marsters. And my Geek Crush Wil Wheaton. And my Geek Girl Crush Felicia Day.

I'll get to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] spellwight while I'm down there.

I've already got a VIP ticket for the James Marsters Concert on Saturday night. I've missed hearing him live. It's been 4 years!

Should be a great weekend!

Well OK, not exactly doing science. But geeking out over science. That counts, right?

While I've been an LJ slacker I've been sitting over here getting all excited about the fact that in less than a month I'M GOING TO SEE A FREAKING SPACE SHUTTLE LAUNCH!!!!! (Because it WILL NOT be delayed. Right? RIGHT?!)

Discovery makes a safe landing tomorrow. Then they will start moving Atlantis to the launch pad at 6:00 pm tomorrow evening. I assume they will be using that super awesome crawler that I saw on Dirty Jobs. (I ♥ Mike Rowe)

Our group that will be there on launch day now includes me, [livejournal.com profile] hellbob, [livejournal.com profile] genevra, [livejournal.com profile] akdar & the Monkeys, our friend Mark & his girlfriend Sarah, and HellDad! We're all traveling on different days & times and staying at different places, but we'll all be there for the launch, hopefully on the Causeway.

Our dad was so obviously jealous that we were gonna see a shuttle launch that [livejournal.com profile] genevra & I are covering his costs. It really is the least we can do for the man that made sure that the movies we saw at the theater as children were things like Star Wars, Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan, and E.T.!

We don't have our tickets for Causeway Launch Viewing yet. *sigh*
The web site *used* to say Space shuttle launch viewing tickets typically go on sale four to six weeks prior to the scheduled launch date. Now it says three to six weeks prior. It changed about a week and a half ago. This week is 3 weeks prior, so I've got the ticket page set as my homepage so that I'll hopefully see as soon as they go on sale. This is a once in a lifetime thing for me, I want to be as close as possible!!!

Speaking of once in a lifetime, I'm trying to decide if I want to take pictures of the launch or not... LOL! Just f**king with you. Of course I'm going to take pictures. I'm planning to bring my super giant monster 400mm 2.8 lens with me. After all, if I'm going to be 6 miles from the launch site, I need a little bit of a zoom. I don't have a tripod I can take with me though because mine is just too big & heavy. The current plan is to rent a carbon fiber one from Lens Pro To Go and have it shipped to our timeshare where we are spending the first night. Then I can use it the whole time we're down there and send it back before we fly home.

I just signed up for this today:

NASA Hosts the Ultimate Tweetup at Space Shuttle Launch in Florida

For a second time, @NASA Twitter followers are invited to view a launch in person.

NASA is hosting this Tweetup for 150 people on May 13-14 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The two-day event will provide NASA Twitter followers with the opportunity to view the shuttle launch and speak with shuttle technicians, engineers, astronauts and managers. The Tweetup will include a "meet and greet" session to allow participants to mingle with fellow Tweeps and the staff behind the tweets on @NASA.

How awesome would that be if I was one of the 150 people chosen? It is just for one person though, I wouldn't be able to bring a guest. I'd feel a little guilty about abandoning the rest of the family for something so awesome, but I wouldn't let that stop me. Besides, they pick on me about Twitter. If they Twittered they could enter too. Despite the no guest rule, I would be sneaking one in - a certain adventurous little Moose! I'll know by the 22nd if I'm one of the lucky 150 picked. Fingers crossed!

To Infinity, and Beyond!

[livejournal.com profile] genevra, [livejournal.com profile] akdar & the monkeys are going down to see one of the last shuttle launches.
When they told us this prompted a lot of jealous musings of "I wish I could go."
We can get round trip flights to Orlando in May for less than $200 each! Well, with airfare being that cheap [livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I decided that we ARE gonna go!

NASA - STS-132

STS-132, here we come! The launch is scheduled for 2:28 pm on Friday, May 14.

Unfortunately we can't stay down there for too long because I don't get paid time off, and the hotel costs can really start to add up. But, we are planning to fly down Thursday evening (so I can work all day Thursday, or most of the day at least) and then probably fly home on an early morning flight on Monday.

I can't believe we're actually gonna see a shuttle launch. I'll definitely be bringing my precious baby - the 400 mm 2.8 lens.

So exciting! Also, so potentially stressful. It would really suck to go all the way down there and not get to see the launch because it's delayed past our time there. Does Cape Canaveral sell "I came to see the Space Shuttle launch and all I got was this stupid shirt" shirts? :)

Woo hoo!

I've got my ticket down to Arizona for the Phoenix ComiCon purchased! Yay!

I haven't picked up my return ticket yet, because I'm not sure when I'll be headed back, although I am leaning towards a really long Phoenix - Atlanta - Minneapolis over night flight on Sun-Mon because it's the cheapest ticket and I'll have all day Monday to sleep or recover anyway.

But the important thing is that I've got the ticket there!

I'll be arriving in Phoenix at 12:46 PM on Thursday, May 27th.

Ooh, depending on if I plan anything for Thurs, maybe I can go to the Zoo!

That's about the extent of my plans so far. It looks like James Marsters will be doing a Saturday night concert, so that is definitely on my to do list! And it sounds like Wil Wheaton is planning to do RockBand again. I just hope that doesn't conflict with James.

It would be nice to have the convenience of staying at the Hyatt, but that's probably more than I want to spend. I'd have to try to find roomates, which would mean posting on the message board.
The room costs are:
$119 for single / 1 = $119 per night
$119 for double / 1 = $59.50 per night
$144 for triple / 1 = $48 per night
$169 for quad / 1 = $42.25 per night
I don't remember any hotel I've ever stayed at charging $50 more for 2 extra people! That's only reasonable if you get a larger room when you have 4.

So I definitely wouldn't be staying there by myself! I've got 3 months to figure that out though. LOL. I still think the best plan would be for me to just stay in James' room...

Hey [livejournal.com profile] genevra, does your f-i-l have any connections at the Hyatt Regency downtown Phoenix? *grin*

I took this penguin picture in California. That's silly. I should be taking penguin pictures in Antarctica!

Penguin vote
hellziggy: (Default)
OK people. I haven't posted about voting for me for the Antarctica trip since Thursday on LJ and Friday on Twitter/Facebook. I haven't gotten any new votes for over 24 hours.

Time to pester y'all again!!!

Here's the route we will be taking on the cruise:

Not only will I be leaving North America for the first time, but I will be visiting TWO new continents.

Also, Moose REALLY wants to go back to Antarctica and bring me with him this time.

Also, the part in my entry where I said I'd applied for my passport because I'm confident of winning. Totally true. I've had the app for over a year and I finally did it. Make sure I get to use it, ok?

So please, go use ALL your email addresses to register at Quark Expeditions and vote for me to be the Official Quark Expeditions Blogger. And post this for all your friends to vote too. This isn't a U.S. only thing. I've already got votes from Iceland and England.

If you have a non-LJ blog it would be super awesome if you would post about it there with a link to the voting page too.

I solemnly swear to bring back a penguin for anyone who reposts this. *

*um, except for the part where that's totally illegal. But if it weren't, yeah, penguins for all of you!

I need 275 votes to get on the front page. The dude in the lead is still getting votes, so I totally need to get the word out there into some forum where a LOT of people will see it and vote. If we get me to the front page (or even to the 2nd page) I will have an easier time selling it to people to promote.

I've got just over a month to get 4600 votes. Let's do this!

The address to vote for me is here: http://www.blogyourwaytoantarctica.com/blogs/view/548

or if you want something shorter and easier to remember: http://bit.ly/FrozenSharon

or if you want something even shorter for Twitter: http://bit.ly/frzn

Cool! I'm up to 58 votes now. :)

Only 70 people have more votes than me now. 274 more votes will get me onto the front page when sorting by popularity.

Not bad considering that over 500 people have entered, and even though the contest started 2 months ago, I've only been in the running for 3 days.

hellziggy: (Default)
I'm already at 33 37 votes for the Official Quark Expeditions Blogger contest!

It's not a lot of votes compared to the 3848 I need to win, but it's an excellent start. It has already put me ahead of 3/4 of the entrants.

I'm already all the way up to page 8 7 when the entries are sorted by popularity. Once I hit 50 votes I'll be up to page 5. At 100 votes, page 3.

To bump the last guy off of the first page, I need 295 291 more votes. There are only 5 people with over 1000 votes, and only 1 of them is over 2000.

I have 43 more days to collect votes. I've got some ideas for getting more votes. I've started to implement some of them. I really want this, but I don't want to be too pushy.

But, I will be sending emails. Some to specific people asking them individually for help. Some to groups asking for help more generically. My family already got the "You're my family, you HAVE to vote for me" email.

Also, I'm not above bribery. If you're a teacher and you get your class to vote for me, I will send your class messages/videos/postcards/whatever from Antarctica while I'm there. If you are famous and you use your fame to tell people to vote for me, I will mention your awesomeness as I blog from Antarctica and pimp your product, be it book, music, whatever.

I've gotten a few retweets already. I've also got some Facebook repostings of it, and an LJ repost. THANK YOU everyone who's voted and/or reposted.

I went and got a bit.ly address to use. I wanted to keep it short, but couldn't get cold, brr, brrr, or frozen so my short url to get to my voting page is http://bit.ly/frzn. Just remember it by thinking that it's too cold for vowels. LOL Feel free to spread that url around wherever you can!

Rick has said before that when I set my mind to something I make sure I do it. Well, he hasn't seen anything yet.

There are so many places I've wanted to travel too. Of all of them, Antarctica is the one I am least likely to be able to pull off on my own. It would require winning the lottery. Thanks to this contest, I don't have to win the lottery, I just have to have the most awesome friends on the entire internet!

So remember everyone, vote early and vote often*!
*Only real human beings with personal email addresses may register to vote. One vote per person.

February 20 to March 3, 2010 I will be on the trip of a lifetime!

A cruise to Antarctica aboard the Lyubov Orlova.

OK, so it's not official. I sort of have to win this contest first. But, I have the most awesome LJ peeps, Twitter tweeps, and Facebook friends so I know you guys will help make it happen for me!

Here's the deal:

Travel on a $20,000 Expedition for Free!

My entry is HERE

Seriously people. I KNOW you can help make this happen.

Can you just imagine the pictures I would return with?

The winner of the trip will be determined solely by the number of votes. So please, go to the site, register, and vote for your favorite HellZiggy & Moose! Oh, and pimp me out to all your friends too. Do it for the Moose.

I'm seriously thinking about sending in an application for this job:

McCarran Int'l Airport has free wireless!!! W00t!
I'd be doing the dance of happiness if my feet didn't hurt so much!

So, I haven't read LJ since Thursday afternoon. Should we take bets on how far back I'll have to skip? :)

I saw a Cirque de Soleil show.
I won a little money, but I then lost a little more than I won.
I not only saw a Penn & Teller show, but I also got to meet both of them!
I took lots of pictures of Moose
I walked many many miles. It felt like hundreds.

I got to meet [livejournal.com profile] tx_cronopio in person, and I got to see [livejournal.com profile] caoilainn again. We never did get a chance to call [livejournal.com profile] felisblanco though because the time difference to Iceland always made it far too late/early her time to be calling. She might be getting some mail soon though...

So now I'm gonna go see how far back on the flist I have to go, and I'm gonna open stuff in tabs so I can read it while on the plane.

This post is mostly for [profile] caoilainnand [personal profile] tx_cronopioand [personal profile] felisblancoand [profile] mr_felisbut also anyone else who's interested.

Do we seriously want to try to do IceCon 2008?
The lovely Ms. Felis pointed out in one of her recent posts that Gay Pride is in August and there are a lot of dances and stuff going on then. If we decide to do it I can start saving the money for airfare and looking for cheap fares.
I mentioned to hubby that I wanted to go to Iceland and he didn't freak out or say no and he would most likely come with. (Although he did ask if James was going to be there... He seems to think that's the only reason I plan a trip)
