No, I'm not defecting to Dreamwidth. But, one of the LJ's that I follow is moving over there and I don't want to miss her posts. So, I've dusted off the DW that I set up a couple years ago and have bookmarked my reading page.
An ideal solution would be for me to be able to keep posting here and have it crosspost to my DW acct, but that's not possible yet.
What I'll be doing instead is carrying on here as usual, and when I make a post I will just copy & paste it to my journal there. If you're a DW person now and would rather be over there, then just comment on my posts on that side.
If I don't have time to read both though, LJ will be the one that's looked at.

Wow, I knew I was behind on even reading LJ. I just started going back to catch up and I haven't read y'all in a WEEK! I was at skip=400!
So, I'm browsing back through, reading what I can. Don't be surprised if you get random comments to stuff that's days old! LOL

Hey everyone,

LJ has a Happy Holiday promotion.

Share the love with our $10 holiday coupons! If you're a Paid or Permanent user, you can send up to 10 Basic or Plus users a $10 coupon to upgrade to a one year paid account.

Recipients can upgrade for $9.95 (instead of $19.95) for one year by enrolling in our automatic payment plan or make a manual payment of $15 (instead of $25). Please note that these coupons are not transferable and cannot be used to renew existing paid accounts. Recipients must specifically decline the Holiday coupon in order for it to be credited back to the sender.

The coupons are only good for Basic or Plus users to upgrade to paid status.

Do any of you want one???

Also, if you are a Paid or Permanent user and are wondering how to get these nifty coupons to send to your friends, they are here: http://www.livejournal.com/friends/holidaypromotion.bml

Dear LJ,
Please to be emailing comments again?

We all know that there is online language that's not used in real life, like leet-speak and such.

But I'm wondering if any of you have ways of talking online that don't translate to your spoken language in the real world?

For me, it is y'all. I pretty much never use y'all when talking to people. It's just not part of my spoken language. But it is actually fairly common for me to say y'all when I'm writing on LJ. I don't know the reason for this dichotomy, I just found it interesting.

Hey, has anyone else noticed the nifty "Expand" link on comment threads?
You have? It's been there a while, hasn't it?
Anyhow, I have no idea how long that feature's been there, but I lurves it!!!
I hated navigating back and forth to read threads.
Now they just need to incorporate an "Expand all"

Well, I'm up to skip = 75. And I'm tired. So I'm gonna go to bed. Long day tomorrow.
Work at West Photo from 9 to 12ish, then at GM from 12:30/1:00ish to 5:00, then Painting class from 5:30 to 7:45. Then home to do the XHTML homework for Wed nite that I couldn't do at the cabin because my stupid copy of Dreamweaver decided it needed to be activated again and there was no internet at the cabin.
'Nite kids!
hellziggy: (Default)
I went to the cabin this last weekend (with no internets) and then worked all day today (at two different jobs) and then wrote my paper on the Picasso exhibit at the Walker for tomorrow's Painting class.
So I'm just now getting to LJ for the first time since Friday.
Skip = 325!
Holy crap! I'm never gonna get caught up. I'll be skimming to catch up, so let me know if I missed anything important.

LJ has a new feature: "autopost"

It's apparently like the LJ Haiku that goes around on a regular basis, but you don't get to preview before it posts and they are mostly lame so I deleted them.

If you feel the need to try it it is here: http://www.livejournal.com/misc/autopost.bml

But it's pretty much not worth it.

Another anniversary today. Not as important as the one two days ago though...

Today is my LJ fifth anniversary.

Five years ago I had one LJ friend: [livejournal.com profile] chebutykin. Now I've got just over 200 and I have met or know more than half of them in real life. There are others that I am hoping to get to meet soon. ([livejournal.com profile] icecon_2008 is only a year away!)

I don't know whether to be annoyed or amused that my 5th LJversary comes right after LJ/SixAparts latest censorship kerfluffle.

I haven't posted about the latest yet, although I have been reading and following it.
LJ's official response, FIVE DAYS after the deletings occurred is here.

[livejournal.com profile] davedujour, who isn't involved in Harry Potter fandom and, as far as I know, doesn't look at naked drawings of Snape/Harry on a regular basis, presents his view of the situation here. He has many valid points.

Many of my fandom friends are setting up alternate journals at GreatestJournal, InsaneJournal, etc, even though they are by & large not in the HP fandom, but rather Supernatural and Whedonverse. For now, they plan to stay here and the new journals are just backups.

Me, personally? I'm here for the long haul.

~I don't like censorship.
~I don't like LJ deleting an entire account because one drawing which was not even child porn didn't have "artistic merit."
~I don't like LJ refusing to clarify their policies.
~I don't like them stating one thing and doing something else.

So why am I staying then?

~I have a permanent account. No, I didn't get it in the most recent perm account sale.
~Because I have a permanent account and don't ever give LJ/6A money anymore my leaving in protest would not affect them negatively. It would actually benefit them because I wouldn't be using their bandwidth/server space anymore.
~I like the community I've made for myself here.
~I've got LJ friends from Iceland to Antarctica, from England to Alaska. Most of them aren't going to be going to another system, so even if my main site was somewhere else I'd still be checking in here.
~While I do have a fair share of fandom friends, they are only a part of my LJ 'family.'
~Also, I just don't want to deal with the hassle of setting up new journals. If I was willing to maintain multiple journals my Vox journals would actually have content in them!

So to sum things up:

I've been here for 5 years! Yay!

[livejournal.com profile] chebutykin is not my only friend now! Yay!

LJ/6A are pissing off the users again! Boo!

I'm staying anyway! Yay!

OK. Six Apart apologized. They say they are going to reinstate journals that weren't really child-abusers.

Now the uproar & wank is "But...but...that apology isn't good enough! I want them to go back in time to fix things!"

It was good enough for me. They acknowledged that they did things the wrong way. They acknowledged that they fucked up. They are going to attempt to repair the damage.

I think censorshiop sucks.

I also think they were well within their rights as a private corporation to do what they did. That doesn't mean I have to like it.

Yes, I could leave. "OMG! I'm going to Greatest Journal because they aren't EVIL like LJ is!"

But I won't.

I like it here.

I have friends here.

I also have a permanent account.

I've been happy with LiveJournal over-all. I'm not going anywhere. I'm not even going to bother setting up a GreatestJournal 'just in case.'

What I will do is continue to do backups of my journal because everything I write is a pearl of wisdom, yo.

And in a week this will be mostly forgotten and life will go on until the next wank happens.

This didn't affect my journal personally, but it caused a lot of my friends undo worry. That pisses me off. But there are repercussions for LJ. SixApart will lose money over this. Some people will leave. Some people will go to unpaid level. I don't think it will have any major or lasting financial impact for SA, but I do think it will be enough for them to put some thought into it next time they want to do something like this again.

Our free speech is not protected here by law, but I hope this makes SA think again about censoring.

So, it happened. It was bad. They apologized. They will attempt to fix it. I will stay. But I won't be so trusting. But I also won't allow this to change the way I think or post in my journal.

The end. I'm done with this unless there is another major change.

Also, I currently have no plans to start that Hawt Goat-Fucking Action filter...for now

(and yes, that last line was just to give me an excuse to use my goat-fucking tag again, now that I have one!)

*sigh* The LJ kerfluffle I posted about yesterday is still being talked about today. Oh how I was hoping it would be "nothing" and would be gone.

All over my Friends List wonderful people I know are going Friends Only. This makes me so sad because if they had been that way before I never would have found them.
Yes, there are many people on my flist who write BadDirtyWrong fiction about men doing BadDirtyWrong things to other men.

But... there are *NO* child molesters on my flist!

Since I don't write fanfic my interests are pretty tame and not in need of editing. The most risque ones on there are 'vampire porn' and 'spike/xander' and I'm pretty sure the "warriors for innocence" fucktards aren't going to be doing interest searches on vampire porn. Well, unless they are into that kind of thing, of course! I will not be editing any of my interests except to add such things as anticensorship.

As for my journal, it will remain as it has always been, 95% open. I've never felt the need to censor myself or hide and protect myself behind a flock. That's not going to start now. The rare times I do use a filter it is generally not because I am ashamed of posting a link to a fic or putting up a pretty photo manip of Spike & Xander, it is because I have so many different groups of friends on LJ and I know there are ones out there who have no desire to see such things.

However, on the off chance that I decide to take up goat-fucking as a weekend hobby, I reserve the right to change my mind and start flocking everything, ok? But if that happens I'll be sure to give all y'all the option to opt in on my Hawt Goat-Fucking Action filter.

LJ has started censoring. Journals & communities are being suspended because of interests they have listed. This is in response to complaints from a group called "Warriors for Innocence"
The posts about it can be found here, here, and here
It upsets me so much that they are doing this. Yes, some real pedophilia communities were suspended, but at what cost? Freedom of speech is one of our most important freedoms.
Blanket suspensions may have removed some pedophile communities, but had that "Warriors" group chosen to work with law enforcement the real pedophiles could have been caught and arrested rather than getting a big ol' warning to go hide.
Censorship is never a good thing.
I'm glad I don't write fanfic because I don't think I could handle all the drama and wank that goes on, but LJ censoring it will affect me too. I read fanfic and I've found many good LJ friends because of it. I don't read incest or Wincest, and I don't have them in my interests, but just because it's not something I choose to read doesn't mean it shouldn't be there for others. And I'm not even saying that I *never* read Wincest. I don't ever go looking for it, but there is one author on my flist that writes it and I will read it when she does because I will read *anything* she writes. She is just an excellent damn writer. But for me she is the exception. If it is any other writer and the authors notes at the beginning of the fic list any of the things that squick me I just don't read it.
Freedom of speech doesn't mean you are required to read things you don't want to, it means that they have the right to exist and it is your decision to read or not.
I'm really hoping that we will find in a day or two that we all overreacted in response to this... *sigh*

There are other blogging systems out there that "real" bloggers use: Blogger, Blogspot, Typepad, etc.
And I follow some blogs regularly that use those other systems. But I've always felt a bit of disconnect. No matter how much I enjoyed reading it there was always a feeling that something was missing.
As I started leaving comments in some I realized what it was. The thing that makes LiveJournal my "home" instead of other blogs.
It's the threaded comments.
You can have a conversation in LJ. You can respond to each person individually.
If I leave a comment on one of my favorite non-LJ blogs, BirdChick, the only way to know if there are any responses to what I've said is to go back to the post and scroll down to see if there are new comments.
No, I don't expect responses every time I say something. But I also don't like the fact that someone could respond and I'd never know.
I'm not going to not read non-LJ blogs because of this, but I will be left feeling that no matter how cool someone is, I will have a hard time establishing the connections that I get with y'all here on LJ.
This is also why I allow anonymous posting. If someone reads my LJ and wants to say something, I don't want them prevented just because they don't have an LJ of their own.
But I really wish they would get one. :)

My first long friday since switching my schedue for school... Not gone insane yet...

I've been playing with my journal layout because I was getting bored with it and LJ had added the Vox styles. So I picked the one I liked but it didn't have enough options in the customize. Mainly in font choice and size. It was a titch too small for my liking because I keep all my monitors at max resolution.
I've found one now that I like. It has a tags list. It has the skip forward/back links at the top (always a good thing because I read entries from bottom to top) The theme I picked has a black background w/light text which I prefer to the opposite. There are clear line delineations between each entry. The user pics don't affect the text alignments.
So many things I didn't realize I wanted but now have.
I'm going to wait until I'm home though to start tweaking the colors, font sizes, etc.
hellziggy: (Default)
Well, I'm up to "skip=100" on trying to catch up from my weekend away from the internets. Damn you lot are prolific! Giving up, going to bed, will catch up more tomorrow.

Is comment notification being a bitch for anyone else today, or just me???

*edited to add*

[livejournal.com profile] anonymous_greg is obviously smarter than me because he immediately provided me with a link to the problem. It's a beta of new comment notifications that is using permanent accounts as the guinea pigs.
This also explains the little pushpin buttons for tracking entries, threads, etc that appeared in my journal but I hadn't seen anyone on my flist talking about them. Perfect for when you comment in someone elses journal and someone responds to you (which you get an email about) and then someone else responds to them (which you don't get an email about.) I think I need to find me some threads to follow to test this puppy out.

Just curious, how many of you out there on my flist are permanent accounts?

I hadn't gotten around to filling up my 100 icons yet, and now I have 132 and that number will keep growing...

Tell me what icons I need!

I like to use icons I've made or someone has made especially for me. No good reason for this since there are plenty of icons out there nicer than mine. I just like the fact that the icons are another extension of me.

I prefer photos I've taken, but if it's something I don't have a pic of I don't mind using clip art. For tv/movie icons I like doing the screen cap myself, but it's not neccessary. It's just me being OCD.

Is there a phrase or quote I need on an icon? Is there a show/movie/band that I need?

I've got room for 66 more user pics so all suggestions will be considered.

I can have 132 user pics now. :)

I really need to start making some more!

Here's a link that y'all should find useful, since LJ is still a butthead:

It just shows comments in your journal, but it also shows comments you have left in both yours and other peoples, so if there is one you thought you would get a reply to and you haven't it is easy to find.

*kicks LJ again*

So yeah, if you say something and I ignore you, it's not because I'm a bitch, it's because LJ is a bitch. I'm not saying I'm not a bitch, I'm just saying that it might not be why I'm ignoring you!
