Reading and posting on LJ improves my mood. I should remember this. I miss you all, even though I see a lot of you on the Facebook and the Twitters.

Getting out to see people improves my mood. I should remember this. I had a FABULOUS time at the State Fair last night. First I took pictures of farm animals and stuff. Then I watched a set & a half of Martin Zellar. It was actually 3/4 of the Gear Daddies because both Nick & Randy were there. Then [livejournal.com profile] 7thstranger & I walked & chatted as I took more pictures and I ate some cheese on a stick.

Finding out that a friend has died does not improve my mood. [livejournal.com profile] gingerpook lost her battle with cancer this morning. You'll be missed Ginger.

Yeah, last week was quite the roller coaster, with extreme highs and extreme lows.

The low was, of course, losing Gabriel. But, out of this came a confirmation of something I already knew. I have the most awesome friends, both online and in real life. So many sweet & touching comments from y'all here, and over on Facebook, and on Twitter. We also got a half dozen cards and 3 bouquets of flowers. Our neighbor Tammy planted a hosta for Gabe back where we buried him.

It's been tough, but Monday really was the worst day. It's gotten better. The sadness hits at weird times though. Like when I put the carpet cleaner away under the sink. I started crying because I wouldn't be cleaning up cat barf a couple times a week. Not that I miss the barf, just the barfer.

Lump seems unfazed. We expected that.

And then the highs. I know I mentioned the NASA Tweetup that I got picked for. I don't think I posted anything since then though. I'm going! Although incredibly jealous, [livejournal.com profile] hellbob said that I shouldn't miss it because it's the opportunity of a lifetime. So I changed my plane ticket to fly down Wednesday and will be spending most of the day Thursday at Kennedy Space Center. The whole rest of the crew ([livejournal.com profile] hellbob, [livejournal.com profile] genevra, monkeys, etc) will be watching the launch from a river boat, and will also go on a bit of a nature cruise.

I've got my camera gear sorted out for the trip. My giant lens is going w/me in my carryon and I've got a carbon fiber tripod rental set up down in Orlando. I'm sort of nervous about going to meet such a huge group of people where I don't know anyone, but at least we can get to know each other on Twitter first. And of the 3 other people I've learned of that are going down from Minneapolis, one of them is actually on the same flight as me. I haven't met her yet so that could be good or bad! LOL. We're even going to give her a ride to the airport with us most likely. I just wish we could have brought a plus one so that I could have [livejournal.com profile] hellbob there with me for the launch. I'm going to miss getting to see it with him. :( Moose is awesome, but he's no Rick.

Oh crap. It's 1 am already? So much for my plans of doing a post about my weekend. :)

We had a lovely weekend with Becca visiting. We had dim sum at Jun Bo on Friday. I went shopping with her on Saturday. We played board games every night.

Her friend Albert was pretty weird & annoying though. He has zero social skills and no concept of how to converse w/o a computer screen. He also doesn't really shower. Strange boy. Not gonna be sad if I never see him again.

After the headed back to Fargo today, I picked up [livejournal.com profile] lablynne and hit the Birds & Beers gathering that Birdchick had organized. It was at Joe's Garage, so we could watch the 1000s of crows gather to roost for the night. Huge group. Biggest B&B ever. Beekeeper Virginia showed up! I hadn't seen her since I visited her bee hive this summer.

It was a nice weekend. I'm not ready to go back to work tomorrow.

I haven't checked out the prices to fly to Phoenix in May yet, but I did google map the drive. 28 or 29 hours, depending on which of the two routes you take. If I drive I prefer the route through Denver, just because it's a part of the country I've never seen. And Denver is almost exactly the 1/2 way point. It would be a long drive though. Twice as long as the Epic Road Trip To Toronto To Touch James Marsters. Flying will probably be cheaper.

And no, it's not decided yet that I'm going. But until it is definitively decided that I'm not, I'm going to just keep that hope alive! :)
hellziggy: (Default)
I was planning to lounge around the house today but a tweet from Virginia reminded me that she was going to be doing a demo at her beehive today.

I hopped in the shower, tried to get a 100mm macro from West but none were available, and headed over to the strange land of St. Paul to see a bee hive. I got there just as she was starting to open it up.

It was very cool. I got to hold a frame full of honey & bees. I got to taste honey straight out of the hive. I got to hold a cute l'il drone dude that had just hatched/emerged from his cell. And I got to chat with Virginia who I had just met last weekend and who is super cool.

I'll have a TON of photos up on Flickr tomorrow or so, and I'll post some here too.

Then shortly after I got home [livejournal.com profile] romeoa came over and we went out to dinner at El Loro. Yummy Mexican food! Then back at the house the boys smoked icky smelly cigars as the three of us sat around the firepit and had a VERY tasty wine. Donausonne Blaufränkisch from Hungary. A red wine that is a little sweet, but not too sweet. Not quite a dessert wine. I have to say, it was tastier than dad or grandpa's wine...
Then I had some of dad's wine, so I'm in a happy wine place right now. That's why I'm not going to get my bee pictures up tonight.

So, a very nice day today, and now it's time for bed. 'Nite, y'all.

[livejournal.com profile] bloodlossgirl & LJ-less Nick are married now.
It was a fabulous ceremony and an even more fabulous reception.
They are adorable and I have pictures (later when I'm not drunk)
[livejournal.com profile] lexinatrix & hubby were there. And [livejournal.com profile] bleaknimue & [livejournal.com profile] suibhne_geilt & [livejournal.com profile] nigel_corvix. And [livejournal.com profile] nicepersonality. And LJ-less Jim (Hi Jim!) who's wife I've already met because she comes into my work.
It was fun and I had a lot of wine. So I am going to ravish the awesome [livejournal.com profile] hellbob now and will post more about the fun weekend later.
(Weekend details will include what happens when a crazy man with money starts collecting stuff... a.k.a. The House on the Rock)

[livejournal.com profile] davedujour pointed something out a couple days ago and I noticed it's true for me too. There are at least 5 women on my flist that are pregnant. And of those 5 only 2 of them are among his 5 pregnant flisters. And I have a non-LJ friend who is pregnant too.
It's like an epidemic.
And no, I'm not hinting at anything for myself. I'm definitely not pregnant right now.

I've got a plate full of porketta for dinner.
I've got a glass of Young's Double Chocolate Stout.
I've got a Lump cat sleeping on my lap.
I've got last week's Supernatural playing on the Tivo.
I've got [livejournal.com profile] lucky13charm here to watch the Oscars.
I've got the Oscars recording waiting for us to start watching.
Yeah, it's a good night!

Happy New Year to you all, my darling flist!

My evening was spent with many lovely friends, only one of whom has an LJ (Happy New Year, [livejournal.com profile] camel0t!) It was a very nice end to a year which has had many ups and downs but ended with more in the up column than in the down.

Since I'm tired and not feeling all eloquent and shit I will instead steal a quote from the supercool Neil Gaiman:

May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't to forget make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.
hellziggy: (Default)
I signed up for this:

[livejournal.com profile] lablynne is also already signed up so I'm expecting to have a fabulous time!
I'm getting a telephoto lens from work for the weekend so hopefully I'll have some great shots to share.

I just spoke to [livejournal.com profile] gingerpook. [livejournal.com profile] gunthar is doing much better. They have ruled out appendicitis and now believe it is related to chronic pain issues he's had. He is hooked up to an IV and is getting the really good drugs. His blood tests have come back good so far. Ginger said he may even be going home as soon as tonight.
[livejournal.com profile] gingerpook also told me to pass her thanks on to [livejournal.com profile] fairoriana and [livejournal.com profile] wiredferret for their help in getting someone to [livejournal.com profile] gunthar
hellziggy: (Default)
Holy crap. What a night. [livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I had just finished dinner w/ a guest and were sitting around chatting when the phone rang.
[livejournal.com profile] hellbob looked at the caller id and said "Who is [[livejournal.com profile] wiredferret' RealName]? Now since this is someone I don't think I have *ever* talked to on the phone I figured something must be wrong.
When I answered the phone [livejournal.com profile] wiredferret asked if I'd been on LJ and said [livejournal.com profile] gunthar needed help.
I got on the computer and saw this post.

wendy at fringe

cant find phone

need ER

door no locked not

I opened my address book to see if I had a phone number for [livejournal.com profile] gunthar and I didn't, but I had an address. I told Wired that I was going to call 911.
When I got the 911 I told the operator what was happening and they transferred me to the one where he lives.
They said they would be sending both police and ambulance.
Then I waited. And hit refresh on LJ pages & email. And waited. And hit refresh.
When [livejournal.com profile] jmanna saw the posts she called [livejournal.com profile] gingerpook who rushed home.
No details yet on what happened/what's wrong.
According to [livejournal.com profile] jmanna he's at Fairview and Ginger is with him. He's heavily medicated for pain. They're thinking appendicitis or something similar. No confirmation yet.
You have to love the internets. [livejournal.com profile] fairoriana in Boston saw the post, called [livejournal.com profile] wiredferret in Seattle, who called people here in Minneapolis until she found someone who had his address.

If any of y'all ever need to find my contact info, it's in a flocked post, way back at the beginning of my LJ. It is back dated to July 12, 1970.

I'm still worried about [livejournal.com profile] gunthar, although a little less so now that I know he's at the hospital and his wife is with him, but I really have to get to sleep. I'll have the phones near the bed if anyone calls with an update.
hellziggy: (Default)

[profile] beorcwyn: is new on my flist, so I really don't know anything about where he lives and if he's likely to have been near the bridge.
He has checked in and is ok
[personal profile] cleo &  [profile] romeoa[profile] mattmn  is pretty sure they are out of town, but it would be great if any of the rest of y'all could confirm that.
Yes, cleo & romeoa are out of town. Thank you [profile] craftygeekette!

[profile] lady_gunsen: She doesn't post often, and [profile] jennett, she still doesn't drive, right? So I'm pretty sure she's fine.

[personal profile] lexinatrix: I haven't heard from you yet!!! [personal profile] bloodlossgirlis still worried about you too! If anyone knows about Lex please drop a comment!!
Thank you [personal profile] davedujour! Lex reports in ok, but without cell service.

I believe that every other Twin Cities person on my flist has been accounted for.

My Twin Cities peeps who haven't done an "I'm OK" post yet. Let me know if I can cross any of these off yet.

Problems with ddddddddddddddddddd
My d key isn't working very well - i have to sometimes hit it several times for it to work - so if a word looks funny in this post and would make more sense if it had a 'd' somewhere in it, it probably should.

OK. Important stuff first: My Happy Happy Joy Joy post from just over a week ago.

[livejournal.com profile] genevra is pregnant! There's gonna be another Monkey in February!!! Yay! Me & [livejournal.com profile] hellbob get to be Auntie & Uncle again! The doctor told her that it is just one this time, but that's what they told her at the first ultrasound last time too!

Not so good stuff: My layoff happened on schedule last friday. Because this first week unemployed is a holiday week followed by CONvergence weekend, I'm not really hitting the job hunt hardcore until next week. Thank you to you all who expressed best wishes/condolences/etc. on my "I'm unemployed" post. I really just wasn't feeling up to replying last Friday.

My what the hell I've been up to lately bullet points:
*Drank yummy beer and chocolate martinis friday afternoon (started at 2 pm!)
*Had dinner at El Loro with [livejournal.com profile] hellbob, [livejournal.com profile] lucky13charm, [livejournal.com profile] michaellee & [livejournal.com profile] frozendragon.
-----*[livejournal.com profile] lucky13charm had been an El Loro virgin before that!
-----*[livejournal.com profile] frozendragon - If you remembered to bring my book I forgot to get it from you! Either this weekend maybe, or when I get the roaster pan back from you?

*Went down to Hidden Valley Campground w/[livejournal.com profile] lucky13charm on Saturday to camp with Tiki Neighbors & Friends™
-----*Had to buy a tent before going to camp. Now that we own a tent I intend to convince [livejournal.com profile] hellbob that we should camp more!

*Came home from camping and showered! Yes, this deserves its own bullet point!
*Went to Ratatouille w/[livejournal.com profile] hellbob. We liked it.

*Did the online application for The Creative Group and got my resume and stuff together for my meeting there on Tuesday.
*Clan Foley came over for dinner, and after dinner I almost kicked butt at Star Wars Monopoly, but [livejournal.com profile] hellbob pulled out the win in the end.

*Went downtown to The Creative Group.
*Fucking Rocked the Photoshop proficiency test! I got 92%. The average of everyone who's taken it was only about 77%.
*I also did good on the In Design test. I got 80-something% and the average score for that was 60-something%. Also, more important, the chick I met with knew that I was all self-taught on In Design which makes 80+% extra impressive.
*Went to the Police concert at the X with [livejournal.com profile] hellbob,[livejournal.com profile] kaldeth, [livejournal.com profile] kalfoley, [livejournal.com profile] romeoa, and Jeanine-of-no-LJ. [livejournal.com profile] levertwok also managed to score a same-day ticket.
-----*It makes [livejournal.com profile] hellbob gloat a little to hear it, but I like the Police more now than I did before seeing them in concert.
-----*This does not in any way, however, change my complete love of Uncle Kracker's music!!!

Wednesday, aka The 4th of July, aka Independence Day
*Besides being the birthday of our country, July 4th is also [livejournal.com profile] hellbobDad's birthday.
*We went to Hellbob's step-sister's house to celebrate the momentous occasion of my father-in-law's birth.
-----*All his gifts were either gin, or golf related.
*[livejournal.com profile] hellbob unfortunately had some kind of minor stomach ookiness going on so he stayed home that evening while I...
*Went to [livejournal.com profile] mhuot & [livejournal.com profile] dragonsden's annual 4th of July Fireworks party with [livejournal.com profile] akdar, [livejournal.com profile] genevra, [livejournal.com profile] technomonkey_m, and [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonkey_b.
-----*There was much good food (meat on a stick!) and even more good company. I will forget people, cuz that's how I roll, but attendees included [livejournal.com profile] shrique, [livejournal.com profile] tripstumblefoot, and their lovely N, [livejournal.com profile] kalmn, [livejournal.com profile] monstersocks, and Mr. Monstersocks (whose LJ handle escapes me at the moment), Erik, Linda, ummmmmm and a buncha other people!
*The loudness of the fireworks scared the Monkeys at first, but by the end they were enjoying the heck out of them.

Thursday, aka today
*I slept in.
*didn't do much during the day.
*Went to the MN Zoo's member preview of the revamped Minnesota Trail
-----*If you live in the Twin Cities, go see it! They've made a lot of really nice changes. It certainly had needed this facelift after the almost 30 years since the zoo opened.

Friday. Yes, Friday hasn't happened yet, so I can't tell you what I did. But I can tell you what I'm gonna do!
*CONvergence starts tomorrow.
*That is where I will be all weekend.
*If you know me, say hi.
*If we haven't met yet, say hi. But also tell me who you are!
*If you want to contact me, my cell number is in a friends only post back in 1970.

I gots me a new cell phone! And it is PINK. I'm just so glad to finally have a different phone because I've never really liked my old one. The test will be tomorrow when I see if I have reception at work.
My new phone looks like this:

Anyhow, there is a point to this post. If I don't have your phone number and you think I should drop me a comment. I'll be screening them.

Damn it!

I just got word a bit ago that the world is an emptier place.

Joe Murphy, from the Farpoint Media podcasts, passed away about an hour ago. He's one of the nicest guys that I wish I'd had the pleasure to meet, but never did. :(

Fucking cancer!

The incredible Leann Mabry of the Tag in the Seam podcast has organized the Joe Murphy Memorial Fund to raise money to cover the expenses from Joe's treatment, to give back to the Hospice that took such good care of Joe at the end, and most importantly to raise money for research on Leiomyosarcoma.

About LMS )

If you have a couple bucks to spare, please consider donating to this fund. Joe was a super sweet guy who's tumor was just found/diagnosed barely 4 months ago. Now he's gone. It was inoperable and LMS is resistant to both radiation and chemotherapy.

So after hearing this news today I was on my flist. One of you is looking at surgery and possibly the 'C' word. Fuck no! I can't deal with that! You will be fine! There is no choice, you just have to be, ok?

And another of you is in hospital with gall bladder problems and having surgery to get it removed. You aren't allowed to let anything go wrong either, ok?

Joe, I'll be using my Sunspot pint glass to drink one for you tonight. Godspeed Mason Rocket, and safe journey Randy Innuendo.

There are other blogging systems out there that "real" bloggers use: Blogger, Blogspot, Typepad, etc.
And I follow some blogs regularly that use those other systems. But I've always felt a bit of disconnect. No matter how much I enjoyed reading it there was always a feeling that something was missing.
As I started leaving comments in some I realized what it was. The thing that makes LiveJournal my "home" instead of other blogs.
It's the threaded comments.
You can have a conversation in LJ. You can respond to each person individually.
If I leave a comment on one of my favorite non-LJ blogs, BirdChick, the only way to know if there are any responses to what I've said is to go back to the post and scroll down to see if there are new comments.
No, I don't expect responses every time I say something. But I also don't like the fact that someone could respond and I'd never know.
I'm not going to not read non-LJ blogs because of this, but I will be left feeling that no matter how cool someone is, I will have a hard time establishing the connections that I get with y'all here on LJ.
This is also why I allow anonymous posting. If someone reads my LJ and wants to say something, I don't want them prevented just because they don't have an LJ of their own.
But I really wish they would get one. :)

Thank you [livejournal.com profile] lucky13charm!

I received a package today from our favorite South American river! The lovely Miss [livejournal.com profile] lucky13charm got me Bones S1 & a Me First & the Gimme Gimmes CD for Christmas. Thank you so much!

I didn't go to work on Friday! Instead I slept in and then at about 11:00ish [livejournal.com profile] kniblet & [livejournal.com profile] dibsy called to let me know that they were on their way to my house from their hotel.
I introduced them to the little fuzzy ones and then gave them a tour of our house. Apparently our house was built using Time Lord technology because it was much larger than it looked from the outside. We didn't have any specific plans, so before heading out we watched the newest episode of Smallville. Man, that Oliver Queen is a pretty pretty boy!
After the show we headed out for food. Big Bowl at Ridgedale. Yum! And we did some shopping (although somehow I am the only one who bought anything...)
After shopping, we had a brief visit to the MonkeyHouse to see [livejournal.com profile] genevra, [livejournal.com profile] technomonkey_m & [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonkey_b. [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonkey_b found Moose sticking out of my back and 'liberated' him. They also both decided my lap was the best place to sit to eat their snacks.
After that it was time to hop in the car to go meet [livejournal.com profile] freyjakj, [livejournal.com profile] oed_1 & [livejournal.com profile] hellbob at a coffee shop since [livejournal.com profile] freyjakj & [livejournal.com profile] oed_1 had not yet met them in real life yet.
There was much more fabulous chatting. Then freyjakj & oed_1 had to head home to their munchkin, [livejournal.com profile] boliviafang showed up, and we all left for dinner at Soba's. [livejournal.com profile] genevra, [livejournal.com profile] mle292 and [livejournal.com profile] vanaabegra showed up too and there was still more fabulous chatting.
Today [livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I slept in while the Nibleys went to look at art with mle & vanaabegra and we met for lunch after that. Very tasty dim sum at Jun Bo. The yummiest bit of food there was the squid! Now I'm relaxing on the couch at home waiting for the Nibleys to show up so that we can, you guessed it, go eat!

Yay! Only a day & a half until the Attack of the Nibleys, Vol. 2!
And I have Friday off work!
