I need a vacation! Instead, I'm going to the cabin w/the family. LOL

My parents' "cabin" is a house on the lake w/2 bedrooms & bath upstairs, 1 bedroom, bath, living room, dining room & kitchen downstairs, a slightly finished basement with more than enough room for a few air mattresses, and a deck. Of course, even though it sounds big, the annual Kids Weekend puts 17 people into that cabin.

We won't have air conditioning, or internets. We also probably won't have cell reception.

I'm planning on getting a lot of writing done. I still have some space shuttle stuff to write, the rest of the Florida trip, pretty much all of Phoenix ComiCon, w00tstock, CONvergence, and, of course, the newest Antarctica contest. A bunch of those will also be getting posted over at the Frozen Sharon site.

I really haven't done much pimping for votes on this contest yet because I just haven't had the energy. With minimal mentions I'm in 39th place. This time you only have to make the top 5, and then the judges choose from them. I'm 362 votes from being in the top five. I'm going to get some blog posts ready this weekend and also get emails ready to send out. This time for the contest I'm going to try to get people who tweet & blog about it for me to all try to do it in the same few days. Maybe more people will click to vote if they see more than one person pimping it.

Well, hell. I totally forgot to post this before heading to the cabin yesterday. But, the whole "we won't have internets" thing? Not so much. Dad got high speed up here and a wireless modem. So, now I post.

I hope all of you in America had a fabulous thanksgiving, and everyone in the rest of the world had a fabulous day as well!

[livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I did our traditional early afternoon dinner at my aunt's house with a small chunk of the family (only about 25 of us). After stuffing ourselves silly on turkey, stuffing, potatoes, corn, salad, gravy, wine, etc we avoided the turkey coma by engaging in the annual battle: Trivial Pursuit!

Some years it is the Aunts (which includes Uncle Bob as he's the only one of their brothers there) vs. everyone else. This year it was boys vs. girls. Unfortunately we weren't able to convince them to pull out the 20th anniversary edition so we were using the aunt's favorite: the original. This one is actually getting a little tougher because we have to remember that the questions were written about 25 years ago.

The men cried foul when we would not accept Russia when the card said Soviet Union. They were wrong. It would be like saying Iowa when the correct answer was the USA.
One of the questions was "How many teats on a cow?" They got the correct answer of 4, but there was also some comments about how it had to be an even number. Cousin T said something about a cow with 1 teat. My response was, "That's not a cow, it's a bull."
The boys won all the games. *sigh* Maybe next year...

As the 3rd game in the battle commenced it was time for [livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I to leave to head over to his sister's house.

Our tradition there is to go through the sale ads figuring out what we want to go buy the next day. We're not getting too much this year since there's not a whole lot we really really want, and there's not a whole lot of money to spend on it. We'll be getting up at about 6:30ish tomorrow.

Then, after shopping, I head in to work to do my annual super-cleaning of the machines. The store is open, but not the minilab. It's a nice way for me to do it because I'm not actually scheduled to work so I can just come in when the shopping is done. This year I'm bringing my Black & Decker Scumbuster to help with the machine scrubbing!

I decided that I don't need to be sending my family to my LiveJournal to read about the Antarctica contest, so I made a blog for it. I'll also be linking it in my contest entry. I'm not sure how much I will cross post between the two, but I'll try to put links her when I've got new stuff there.

My Antarctica blog is at http://frozensharon.blogspot.com/
Feel free to link it to anyone you know, especially people who are going to vote for me. ;)

One of the things I just love about my iPhone is having access to Twitter all the time now, and not just when I'm at my computer. I also love the option to use TwitPic to link to pictures I've taken with my phone.

I was over at my parents house tonight to have my dad help me build a test tube holder for my school project. While we were working I was also taking pictures and twittering.

Here's my afternoon with dad:

I'm at my dad's house having him help me w/my homework.

Dad has a robot in his workshop. It's only a foot tall though.

Told dad that it is dangerous to have too many robots around They will join forces and rise against humans. He says no, you can trust them.

My geeky dad has Einstein in his basement.

Hi LJ Peeps!

I haven't really posted much of substance lately, have I?

So, there was this holiday weekend we just had... Hope all yours were good.

On Thursday [livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I headed over to my aunt's house for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Lots & lots of delicious food. Followed by the traditional game of Trivial Pursuit. Rather than Aunts vs. Everyone Else we went Boys vs. Girls this year. We also played the 20th anniversary version which the Aunts HATE because they have the original genus version memorized and they don't like that there are questions about things they've never heard of, like Kids in the Hall... After two games hellbob & I headed home to go through the ads & strategize our Black Friday shopping.

Friday hellbob woke me up at 5am. We showered and headed out to Best Buy. We now have a Playstation 3 and Rock Band 2. Also, I picked up Supernatural Season 3 for only $14.99!!!! We hit a few other stores and picked up a few miscellaneous movies. Then after we got home I headed on in to work. I could have taken the day off, but I don't get vacation or holiday pay, so instead I opted to still leave the photo lab closed, but go in and scrub the racks on all three of my machines so they would be nice and clean for the Christmas season. I probably put in about 5 hours or so... Then I came home and played RockBand w/hellbob for a while. After that it was off to Chatterbox for [livejournal.com profile] scotia_girl's birthday.

Saturday was lazy. There was a little more RockBand, and some grocery shopping. Unfortunately we also got a call from Rick's Aunt Sue that his Grandma's brother Joe and died. He was 90 yrs old, and he went fast & painlessly from an aneurism with almost all of his family there, so it was about the best circumstances they could have had.

Today we got up and hit the road at about 11 to head up north. Last night hellbob had decided that we should run up to visit his grandma since she sounded pretty down on the phone after hearing about Joe. Turns out that Joe's son Jim & his wife had also decided to drive up to visit her. They live in Vegas, but had flown to Minnesota when they got the call about Joe. It was nice to get to visit with them, and I know Grandma was happy to have so many people come see her. Then we stocked up on meat (you can't find really good porketta here in the Cities) and headed on home.

For a long weekend I really didn't get much relaxing done!

As we were eating dinner Friday night, I asked my cousin & his wife, "So, is Kathy just slurring more now that she's getting older, or is she half in the bag?"
My cousin: "I'd guess half in the bag. Either that or she just had a stroke because she wasn't slurring 3 hours ago."
Kind of sad, because mom really does drink too much these days, but also really damn funny.
On a less funny note, I also noticed that mom was coughing A LOT this weekend. And not just "oh, I have a cold" coughs, but the kind of coughs you only get from someone who has been smoking for over 40 years. Not that Kathy would ever admit that smoking might be the cause of the cough. Smoking isn't bad for you, just ask her. But yeah, her coughs were so much worse than they've ever been in the past. *sigh*

So, did y'all miss me?
You did notice that I was gone all weekend, right? RIGHT?!?!?

Well, this last weekend was the annual "kids weekend" at my parents' cabin.

And by cabin I mean 3 bedroom, 2-story plus finished basement lake home. With no air-conditioning. Boy was that nice the year it was 150º with 300% humidity...

So, pretty good sized for a "cabin" but crowded anyway. The roll call:
HellMom (aka Kathy)
HellDad (aka Jim)

Yes, you counted right. 16 people in a contained space for 2.5 days. But hey, no one killed anyone else. Yay.

The weather was absolutely perfect. We could not have asked for better weather. The kids were able to spend all day Saturday in their swimsuits and play in the lake a lot. It was sunny. There was a slight breeze. Definitely lovely weather.

I got a good solid tripod from rental at work on Friday so I was all set to stalk loons w/my über-lens. Took the camera on the boat twice on Saturday and got a few good loon pics. Wily little bugger was feeling very camera shy the first time. Second time there were two of them and they were staying up and not diving. Unfortunately that was just about at sunset so I was losing light fast. Still, got some good ones.

My little Monkeys are still the cutest kids ever. X is a cute kid too, but I don't see him enough for him to adore me as much as [livejournal.com profile] technomonkey_m & [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonkey_b do. All the kids were having a fabulous time catching frogs and playing in the lake. [livejournal.com profile] technomonkey_m was hooked on looking through his grandpas "bignoculars." I think he called them that because when you looked through them it made things look big. :)

[livejournal.com profile] gigglemonkey_b decided to build a house for the "dipmunk" that lived in the woodpile. HellDad had a spot where he put seed out for the chipmunks, and that is where B decided to make it a house. She took a bunch of loose stones and put them in a circle around the seed making sure to leave a gap for the door. She was so proud of the house that we didn't have the heart to tell her that the dipmunk probably wouldn't even use the door, he'd just go over the rocks.

As were were just starting to haul stuff to the car I heard a woodpecker knocking so I looked up. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker! Sweet! I'd never seen one in the wild before, just one at banding. Of course this meant I had to grab my camera with BIG lens and tripod to try for photos. I got some OK ones.

I also got everyone else's memory cards dumped onto my computer so I can compile photo discs for everyone.

But for now I am tired. I also have 2.5 days of the internets to catch up on. 'Night!

OK, so clan Foley has departed and I caught up on reading LJ. It was at skip 225! After only 2 weekend days! Of course, two of you on the flist were posting blogathon posts...
I've got many tabs open with the intention of commenting.
This may or may not actually happen tomorrow.

We left off on the last post with me having gone to a kick-ass Sunspot concert.

[livejournal.com profile] hellbob woke me up at 7 the next morning so we could head on up to the Iron Range. His grandmother's 95th birthday is tomorrow and so the whole family was up on Saturday to throw her a party. We were in charge of bringing the drinks so we stopped partway up and bought a ton of pop & ice, so the pop was cold by the time we got to town. The party was in the senior center in Keewatin. After that, we had dinner at Valentini's in Chisholm with Rick's dad, step-mom, sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew. Mmmmmm. Prime rib! Then it was back to Hibbing to stay at his dad's apartment for the night.

After a quick stop to see grandma again before leaving this morning, we hit the grocery store. $85 worth of meat later... we hit the road for home. I convinced [livejournal.com profile] hellbob we should listen to Coverville, and we went through 4 or 5 episodes before Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me came on NPR.

After getting home I turned on the internets and had to skip way far back. I didn't get to read anything though until the Foley's left. Now I have to go to bed because I'm gonna be getting up early tomorrow.
You'll never guess why...

I'm going to be working! At the place that laid me off! They are sooooo behind now that they got rid of two people that they really couldn't afford to get rid of and so they offered to let me come work on a temporary 'on call, as needed' basis. Works for me. They have to work around my schedule because I am doing `them a favor, but I can bring in some money while still looking. If I'm still there when school starts I will totally work fewer hours to fit my school schedule.

Of course, this isn't a permanent solution and I still want to find something else, but what the hell! I got my 7-week severance pay already!

So, off to bed with me now! :)

Gavia immer

We went to Mom & Dad's cabin in Wisconsin last weekend. It's just north of Webster and south of Danbury.

The cabin was pretty full. It was mom, dad, me, [livejournal.com profile] hellbob, [livejournal.com profile] genevra, [livejournal.com profile] akdar, [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonkey_b, [livejournal.com profile] technomonkey_m, my brother Paul, his wife Jen, their son Xander, my cousin John, his wife Janet, their daughter Sierra, Sierra's cousin Emily, and our friend Mark.

I'm really tired right now so I'm going to put up more pidtures tomorrow.

Did y'all miss me?

Friday I got off work at 1:00 & headed right to [livejournal.com profile] genevra's house so I could ride up to my parents cabin with her, [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonkey_b, and [livejournal.com profile] technomonkey_m. [livejournal.com profile] akdar & [livejournal.com profile] hellbob were going to follow later in the evening after they were off work.

It was a good weekend but really freakin' hot!!!

I'll post more later. And I have pictures. Yeah, I know. Me, pictures. Weird, innit?

First I'm gonna make an attempt at catching up. It was a weekend and I have to skip=175. Prolific lot, weren't you?

Home again

[livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I got home from up north at about 10:30 tonight. I survived over 24 hours with no internets. Can you believe it?

I did continue to take my photos for [livejournal.com profile] hundredpics. Today's was going to be of the statue of the iron miner in Chisholm, but Mother Nature changed that plan by convincing another bird to pose for me. I got a couple great shots of a bald eagle that we passed on the drive home. :)

Hey [livejournal.com profile] freyjakj, look what was waiting for us when we came home!
hellziggy: (Default)

I could have stayed home and slept, but I made a pan of mom's yummy breakfast egg bake and headed on in to work. It was a holiday, so I got paid for my scheduled 6 hours at regular pay. Then I am also going to get paid for 6.5 hours at time and a half. So the paycheck for the week will be like 50 hours instead of 40. This is a good thing. Also, we did the breakfast potluck so there was yummy food too. And I wore Monkey Pajamas. This always makes it a good thing.

Friday night we went to Applebee's with [livejournal.com profile] kaldeth, [livejournal.com profile] kalfoley, Girl Child, and Boy Child. They all had shrimp dishes, but being a heathen and all I got to have steak and shrimp. Yum. After dinner it was a nice evening of just hanging out at their house. I got to show Lisa a few more Photoshop tricks. Also sent her a few links to useful stuff.

It was [livejournal.com profile] genevra's birthday, so we went to her house for dinner and game night. More people were introduced to Salad Bowl. Ben Affleck is not gay!! For her birthday gift I got Jeremiah for her. She said that she had just noticed a few days ago that he was sold. Hee hee! I pretty much had to buy him since I'm the one who named him Jeremiah.

Zombie Jesus Bunny Day.
[livejournal.com profile] hellbob & I trekked up to the boonies to go to my aunt's house for Easter dinner & the kids' egg hunt. I got to see cousin Lindsay's brand new adorable baby girl! Her name is Zoe and she has red hair and she was sooooooooo tiny and sweet.
And of course the monkeys were cute. They both did a respectable job of finding eggs.

I have pictures, of course. I may even get around to uploading them at some point.

[livejournal.com profile] hellbob has been playing some X-Men game on the PS2 all weekend, and I've gotten the urge to play Diablo II. Unfortunately my Diablo II disc is Windows only, and I can't find any downloads of the Mac version... *sigh* At least it's cheap now when I go out and re-buy it. And the Lord of Destruction expansion disc is bisexual so I don't need to re-buy that one...

And now I have to go back to work tomorrow and I don't wanna.

baby soon!

My little baby cousin Lindsay just went into the hospital! She will hopefully have her little girl tonight!!!

(And by little baby cousin, I mean the youngest of my cousins, but she's 21 years old or so... Can't believe she's going to be a mommy!!)

Mother and baby are doing fine. She was born at 1:26 pm.

According to an email from [livejournal.com profile] genevra mom referred to Dec 23, 24, 25, and 26 as Xmas Adam, Xmas Eve, Xmas Day and Boxing Day. I always wondered what the day before Christmas Eve should be called!
